SHIFT Garage SHIFT Garage | Government Grant Application

SHIFT Garage | Application Preview

SHIFT Garage is seeking government grants to support its operations over the next year. The funding would be allocated to cover employee salaries, rent and overhead costs for two fully functional garages, and updating essential tools and equipment. The organization aims to purchase additional vehicle lifts to increase repair capacity.

Founded in 2012 in Rapid City, South Dakota, SHIFT Garage expanded to Sioux Falls last year and plans to establish new locations in Billings, Montana, and Omaha, Nebraska, within the next five years. The goal is to eventually own the properties of these garages to eliminate rental expenses. Currently, SHIFT Garage repairs over 250 vehicles annually and provides 50 program vehicles to individuals in need of transportation. The organization targets predatory "buy here, pay here" dealerships, aiming to lessen their impact on vulnerable populations.

As the largest nonprofit vehicle repair shop in the nation, SHIFT Garage stands out for its proven approach to facilitating transportation solutions that empower individuals. Unlike other temporary assistance programs, it emphasizes long-term vehicle ownership as a means to drive life transformation and workforce reintegration.

The competition is minimal, with CARS in Chicago being one of the few similar organizations. However, SHIFT Garage distinguishes itself by not limiting the number of vehicles repaired or delivered, and it actively promotes vehicle ownership, which is often overlooked by other transportation initiatives.

  • Funding Usage

SHIFT Garage would use the money granted to them to cover current employee salaries and the rent and overhead of running two fully functioning garages for the following year. A grant would also give us the ability to update any broken tools/equipment we have as well as the purchasing of more vehicle lifts to do more repairs simultaneously.

  • Business Plan

The SHIFT Garage started in 2012 in Rapid City, South Dakota. Last year a new garage was started in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In the next five years we would like to start a shop in Billings, Montana and Omaha, Nebraska. In addition to more shops opening, both running garages would like to build and own their own property so they are no longer renting the shops they use. Currently, the SHIFT Garage repairs over 250 vehicles each year for people in need and delivers 50 program vehicles to people who do not currently have transportation. Our hope is to begin cutting into the predatory buy here pay here dealerships that continue to debilitate those who are trying to get back on their feet. We would like to deliver enough program vehicles to put those dealerships out of business. The SHIFT Garage is the nation's largest non profit vehicle repair shop repairing more vehicles than any other organization. Our process is proven to help get people back on their feet and into the work force. Transportation is a critical need across our country and vehicle ownership leads to life transformation. Most programs offer temporary relief or assistance where we offer empowering people in their own vehicles.

  • Self Identified Competition

CARS is a car ministry in Chicago based out of willow creek church. They repair a certain number of vehicles each year. We do not have competitors as a non profit but most cities do not have adequate plans to help with vehicle ownership. We do not cap ourselves with a certain amount of vehicles repaired or delivered. We will do as many as possible. We also promote vehicle ownership unlike most transportation programs.
