Harbor Light Christian School Harbor Light Christian School | Government Grant Application

Harbor Light Christian School | Application Preview

Harbor Light Christian School is seeking government grant funding to enhance security measures across its PK-12 campus, following a vote by the Board of Education to implement four key projects.

First, the school plans to install NIGHTLOCK® LOCKDOWN 1 barricades on all interior classroom, office, and common area doors. This includes replacing two vulnerable dutch-style classroom doors and adding window coverings to ensure quick concealment during emergencies.

Second, to improve its Emergency Operation Plan, the school intends to install a second public address microphone in a secure area outside the main office to facilitate discreet alerts.

Third, the proposal includes adding intercom systems and speakers at all main exterior doors to ensure simultaneous alerts to all personnel during emergencies, addressing existing audio blind spots.

Finally, the school will upgrade its security by installing cameras in areas where there are currently no surveillance systems, especially in the newly added 26,000 square feet that includes a gymnasium, classrooms, cafeteria, and locker rooms.

The recent expansion will allow for increased student enrollment, leading to additional tuition revenue. Harbor Light Christian School emphasizes its role in shaping future leaders for Christ and providing a safe learning environment, which aligns with national educational safety initiatives.

Unlike surrounding larger districts that can rely on increased local funding, Harbor Light's smaller size limits its financial options, necessitating this grant application. The school differentiates itself through smaller class sizes and a unique intergenerational learning approach, allowing younger students to learn alongside older peers. This grant would be a significant step in enhancing both safety and educational quality at Harbor Light Christian School in northern Michigan.

  • Funding Usage

Harbor Light Christian School Board of Education voted to increase security in its pk-12 school. There are four projects in the improvement plan. First: installation of NIGHTLOCK® LOCKDOWN 1 barricades at all interior classroom doors, office doors, and common area doors, such as the library. Two of the existing classroom doors are dutch style, that can be easily breached from the hallway. These doors must be replaced. This stage also includes a window covering for every doorway window and exterior window in the school. Window coverings from NightLock provide quick concealment in case of an emergency. Second: Currently, one of the largest threats to HLCS's Emergency Operation Plan is the location of the public address microphone. Harbor Light Christian School plans to place a second microphone in a secure location, outside of the main office entrance in order to provide an opportunity to alert the school in a concealed manner. Third: HLCS will add an intercom and speakers to the all main exterior doorways for the purpose of ensuring all personnel are alerted simultaneously in the event of any emergency. The present audio "blind spots" leave a possibility of someone moving through that area. Finally: HLCS will add security cameras to the section of the school where cameras do not currently exist. The current security camera system was set up before the recent addition of a 26,000 square foot expansion. The expansion includes a gymnasium, three classrooms, a cafeteria, and locker rooms.

  • Business Plan

Harbor Light Christian School recently added on a 26,000 sq ft addition which contains a cafeteria, 3 classrooms, gymnasium, and locker rooms. With this addition, we will have additional space for more students, which can translate into additional tuition revenue. Harbor Light Christian School is a small school in northern Michigan that is helping prepare next-generation leaders for Christ. This includes training students to be hard workers, leaders in their communities, and upstanding citizens which could one day reach your sphere. In addition, we want to provide a safe learning environment for our students which is an important initiative nationwide and you would be the first to invest in this in northern Michigan.

  • Self Identified Competition

Harbor Light Christian School is surrounded by larger school districts in Alanson, Harbor Springs, and Petoskey who are able to use increased millage/taxpayer dollars to fund these items, whereas we do not have this capability. We have to either increase tuition or fundraise for necessary items. We are different than these other districts because we have smaller class sizes and an intergenerational format that at times, allows our younger students to learn from our older students all under one roof.
