  • Funding Usage

I am seeking financing for startup costs to open Greene Witch Tattoo Den in Bruceton Mills, WV. If awarded a grant, I will be able to pay the pay rent, utility fees and deposits to secure the rental space needed to set up shop. I will buy all equipment for myself and two other artists that I'll employ that we do not already own. With the grant money, I will also pay for internet service and marketing materials including signage, digital ads, website hosting fees, business cards and flyers. The estimated total of the funds needed for startup and the first few months of operation is $25,000. The equipment and tools we need include the following: • Artist chairs • Artist arm rests • Tattoo needle cartridges (variety of different sizes and types) • LED lamps for each artist station • Stencil paper • Printer paper • Printer ink • Stencil transfer fluid • Waiting area chairs and/or couches • Cleaning supplies (brooms, mops, floor/multipurpose cleaner, surface disinfectants, toilet brush and cleaner, toilet plunger, paper towels) • Nonslip floor mats • Rock salt for sidewalks during winter months • Snow shovel • Signage for outside the shop entrance • Decals for storefront window • Business cards • Card reader for payments • Lockable cash box or safe • Tattoo inks • Ink caps • Sharps disposal containers • Backup machine batteries/power supply • Receptionist desk/counter • Rolling tool cart for each artist station • Dental bibs • Rolls of tape • Tattoo machine barrier sleeves • Rubber bands • Grip tape • Saran wrap • Paper towels • Gloves • Trash bags and trash cans • Disposable cups • Bottled water for clients • Snacks for clients • Fridge for employee meals and client water bottles • Large mirrors • Hand sanitizer • Disposable razors • Green soap • Skin numbing/cleansing spray

  • Business Plan

I plan to sell $150k in tattoos, piercings and artwork in the next year. I estimate expenses at $50k per year for supplies, rent and other overhead. Payroll would be $100k in the first year of business. My long-term sales goals are to reach at least $250k in sales by my fifth year in business. According to marketresearch.com, “Average revenues per tattoo studio are estimated at $241k, and the typical tattoo artist earns $50k/year. In large metro areas, shops with 5 or 6 artists renting space, it’s not unusual for a studio to generate $500k or more per year in receipts.” The values in our financial forecast are based on market research and an estimate of how many customers we will realistically get. We are assuming we will grow on an annual basis as we get repeat clientele, they refer their family and friends and the word gets out about our business over time. Popular tattoo shops in Morgantown often have artists' schedules fully booked for 2-3 months in advance. By being the only tattoo shop in Bruceton Mills and the nearest shop to Deep Creek, we are likely to achieve this same level of success. Our team consists of myself, a motivated woman who has already owned and operated a business for five years and knows many of the ins and outs of self- employment and my partner who is a hardworking veteran and artist with many years of experience in the hospitality and sales industries. We also plan to employ a husband-and-wife team who have several years of experience with tattoos and piercings. Together we are knowledgeable about the tattoo industry, sales, marketing and customer service. We are a friendly, experienced, and highly motivated group who will make sure our clients feel comfortable and at ease as we create custom, wearable art for them. Kingwood and one in Reedsville. The shop in Reedsville is over an hour-long drive from McHenry, MD. The shop in Kingwood is around 50 minutes of driving each way. Tourists at the popular vacation destination of McHenry (Deep Creek Lake area) need a more convenient tattoo shop location. Opening a shop at our desired location in Bruceton Mills would cut the commute time from McHenry down to 30 minutes. Our plans to support the local artist community and school districts will set our shop apart from the competition. We will allow local artists to display and potentially sell their art in the shop. We will also partner with schools in Preston County to exhibit students’ artwork several times throughout the year. We also have plans to implement an internship program, in which art students from local high schools will have the opportunity to gain work experience in the tattoo industry and the art field as a whole. They will have the opportunity to learn how a business operates, how to curate art from local artists and learn from experienced artists.

  • Self Identified Competition

Our competition would be the two other tattoo shops in Preston County, WV as well as the many shops in Morgantown, WV. At this time there is no competition in the greater Bruceton Mills or Deep Creek Lake, MD area. Our desire to create a sense of community and promote local art will be very advantageous. Our plan to partner with local schools through an intern program and local artists by displaying their art, as well as hosting art shows, will make us more well known in the area and potentially bring in more business. This community integration sets us apart from the competition. The tattoo industry creates a lot of plastic waste due to supplies being single-use for hygiene purposes. I am dedicated to making a positive change in the industry by using eco-friendly and biodegradable supplies for any single-use items. This will make our shop different from our competitors. I am also a yoga teacher, and I plan to incorporate mindfulness and meditation techniques into my tattoo experience. I want all of my clients to feel safe, relaxed and truly valued as I bring their visions to life by creating unique and permanent body art. I don’t know of any other competitors offering this type of experience.
