Crown Cranial and Orthotics 202304121681697 | Government Grant Application

Crown Cranial and Orthotics | Application Preview

Crown Cranial and Orthotics is seeking government grants to fund the startup of their business, which focuses on providing specialized orthotic care, particularly cranial helmets for pediatric patients. The funding will be used for various initial expenses, including constructing office space, setting up equipment such as computers and a 3D scanner, purchasing medical devices, covering initial rent, and supporting marketing and brand development efforts.

The business aims to establish strong relationships with pediatricians and physical therapists, who will be key referral sources. Crown Cranial plans to engage with these professionals through regular updates on patient successes and educational events like "lunch and learns." Additionally, a strong social media presence will be cultivated to encourage patient testimonials and expand awareness.

The applicant highlights their commitment to patient care and success in generating revenue in their previous role. After a buyout that changed the company culture, they saw an opportunity to provide a more personalized service in an industry increasingly dominated by larger firms, which often compromise quality for cost savings.

In terms of competition, the main players include Hanger Clinic, which operates nationally and is criticized for providing cost-focused rather than patient-focused care. Cranial Technologies poses a logistical challenge, as their nearest office is an hour away, requiring significant travel for repeated appointments. Lastly, Comprehensive Prosthetic and Orthotics has a similar reach but lacks the specialized focus on pediatric needs.

Crown Cranial's competitive edge lies in its unique specialization in cranial helmets and pediatric orthotics within northwest Indiana. This focus allows for more personalized care, fostering long-term relationships with families as children's needs evolve over time.

  • Funding Usage

Funding will be used for office space construction, initial office set up expenses, paying the first couple months of rent, buying devices from manufactures before fitting them to patients, marketing, and brand development. Depending on the space that is leased, office space construction expenses will vary. I will also need funding for office equipment such as computers, tools, and a 3D scanner. I am not able to bill insurance companies for patient’s devices until they receive them, initially I will need some funding to buy devices before fitting them to patients . I want to establish a unique brand and logo so I am recognizable and get the word out about my new business.

  • Business Plan

My business heavily relies on pediatricians and physical therapists to refer their patients to me. I plan to build relationships with my referral sources and allow them to trust me to take care of their patients. I will check in with them regularly and let them know their patient’s success stories after seeing me. I will hold lunch and learns to explain to referral sources how their patients can benefit from devices I provide. I will expand my radius from referrals I already know to reach new referrals and continually check in with them to establish new relationships. I will also establish a social media presence and encourage patients to share their accomplishments with devices from me on their social media pages so others will reach out to me. I am extremely hard working and care about my patients. I was working for the same small company for the last 8 years and out of 20 practitioners, I consistently generated the most revenue per practitioner each year. My company recently got bought out by a large cooperation a few weeks before I had my 3rd daughter. After I returned from maternity leave, I was not happy with the culture of the company or the patient care. This large cooperation is becoming a monopoly in my industry, and patients should have choices for their care.

  • Self Identified Competition

    1. Hanger Clinic - the large cooperation that bought my previous small company out. They have offices all over the country and are actively continuing to buy companies. They are becoming a monopoly in the industry and leaving patients with few choices for care and clinicians with few choices for employment. Clinicians get bonuses based on how much money they save the company, so they will buy cheaper devices to provide to patients, leaving patients with suboptimal care. 2. Cranial Technologies - they specialize in cranial remolding helmets and have offices all over the country. The closest one to my location is an hour away and patients are traveling even further than that to go to them. Patents need to go into the office several times during the 3-4 months they are undergoing treatment; this is a long trip for infants. Cranial Technologies also typically requires 2 helmets for their treatment, insurance typically only covers one. This leaves patients and families often covering the cost of a 2nd helmet on their own. 3. Comprehensive Prosthetic and Orthotics- Their closest office is 30 minutes from my location. They are a bigger company with over 20 different offices and see patients with all different orthotic and prosthetic needs. There are currently no other orthotic companies in northwest Indiana that specialize in cranial helmets and pediatric orthotics. Many patients are traveling over an hour for care and have to for multiple appointments throughout their treatment. A fun part of pediatric care is that pediatric patients are constantly growing and needing new devices each year. This gives me an opportunity to build relationships with families when I see them each year and get to know them. At some of my larger competitors, they have multiple clinicians and patients do not always see the same providers. This is not optimal care as different clinicians do not know patient’s full history and patients are not as comfortable with clinicians they do not know.
