Donovan Pottery | Application Preview
Donovan Pottery is seeking government grants to fund the installation of an air conditioning unit in its studio. Since acquiring the property in 2015, the business has made numerous modifications to enhance its production capacity. As demand has increased, the heat generated from frequent kiln firings has made the studio uncomfortable for employees, particularly during warm months. The estimated cost for the air conditioning unit, including electrical work and installation, is $8,000. Securing this grant would ensure a conducive working environment, enabling the team to continue producing handcrafted pottery.
The business plan outlines ambitious growth strategies, including diversifying product offerings beyond coffee mugs to include tea ware, dinnerware, and kitchen accessories. Additionally, Donovan Pottery plans to introduce a line of artisan teas and coffee, and host various classes and events to engage the local community. The long-term goal is to move to a retail and warehouse location that also serves as a cafe and larger studio for events and workshops.
Donovan distinguishes itself from competitors by prioritizing the customer experience over mere product sales. The vision is to create a space that fosters mindfulness and appreciation for handmade pottery, contrasting sharply with the fast-paced consumer culture. The business also emphasizes hiring and training artists, helping them develop both their craft and business skills, thus enriching the local creative community. Whether or not the grant is received, Donovan is committed to finding ways to procure the necessary equipment to further develop the business.

Funding Usage
Our business operates out of a small studio to create the pottery. We procured the property in 2015, and at the time it was just the shell of a building. Since then, we've been making modifications to the property to serve our needs to produce the pottery. As demand for our products has grown, we are firing our kilns more often which heats up our studio space considerably. During warm Spring-Fall months the temperature in the studio can prevent myself and my employees from being able to perform their duties effectively. My studio needs an AC unit to be able to continue to function- currently we have no cooling system in place. I have received several quotes with the cheapest being $8000 for the unit, electrical work, and instillation. I would like to request a grant to cover these costs. This AC unit will serve a vital function for our business and team allowing us to continue creating handmade pieces of functional art for our community. Thank you for your consideration! Business Plan
Our business has grown considerably in the last few years, and we plan to continue that trajectory in a few different ways: Diversifying and increasing our product offerings to meet customer demand. We currently produce mainly coffee mugs. We plan to expand our offerings to include tea ware, dinnerware, and kitchen accessories to expand our product offerings to grow our revenue. We also plan to source accessory products to sell along with our pottery. We will be adding a line of artisan, loose leaf teas, and coffee to our catalogue and will market those to our customers. We plan to host classes, events and workshops at our premises to engage our local arts and culinary enthusiasts. These events will include things like pottery classes, dinner parties using pottery, and tea services. Our hope is within 5 years to move our of our current studio space, and into a retail location that also serves as a warehouse/shipping location for our ecommerce business, a cafe for coffee and tea with baked goods, and relaxing pottery studio to host larger events, retreats, and classes. I've discovered that many people tend to value craft and art behind pottery. It creates an environment that fosters mindfullness and appreciation for sustainable objects that doesnt exist in the traditional consumerist product development of other industries. My dream of being able to create a place where people can come to slow down, use their imagination to create, and partake in fine foods/drinks out of handmade pots is my defiant response to the fast-paced world many of us live in. My life was changed when I discovered clay, and it has sent me on a journey of craftsmanship and business development that I would never give up. I've been creating with clay for 12 years, and consistently achieved my goals, and stopped at nothing to pursue this life. Whether I receive this grant or not I will find a way to procure the equipment I need- however this grant would help me divert my funds into areas that would help me develop the business.

Self Identified Competition
My competitors are lifestyle pottery brands online, and local pottery studios. East Fork Pottery is a pottery company in Asheville NC that produces large quantities of pottery for home decorators and chefs. Hollowed Earth Pottery is a local pottery studio that offers classes and sells handmade pottery Individual Ceramic Artists in Greenville, SC. My business stands out from these others because none of them are as invested in the narrative of creating experiences like my company. We understand our customers desire an experience from our products- not just the products themselves. My vision for Donovan Pottery is to provide a physical place where people can be served a meaningful experience with pottery through service. My competitors are focused on producing products, while I am determined to provide a rich experience that our customers. My business is also committed to hiring artists, and teaching them skills they need to succeed in their own endeavors. I've noticed that many students who exit art school have little job prospects. For my business I've realized the great value that an artistic mindset has for developing meaningful experiences and products so we are committed to hiring creatives and training them in a craft, as well as teaching them business skills that they can use to develop their own work. We hire creatives in order to ensure that successful creativity is fostered in our community.
