Magical Mischief Collectibles 87-2990348 | Government Grant Application

Magical Mischief Collectibles | Application Preview

Magical Mischief Collectibles is seeking government funding to establish a physical storefront in Naperville, Illinois. The business aims to transition from a solely online operation to a brick-and-mortar shop, capitalizing on the growing local market. Key funding needs include acquiring inventory of rare collectibles, enhancing the store's aesthetic with lighting, and developing branding materials like a professional logo. Additionally, funds will be allocated for furniture and shelving.

The business plan focuses on diversifying the product range, including items like Star Wars figures, Pokémon cards, and Funko Pops. Despite a successful online presence, the owner believes a physical location will attract more customers and enhance sales potential in the lucrative collectors’ market.

The owner emphasizes a strong customer-oriented approach, built on personal connections and excellent service. This strategy has proven effective, leading to positive word-of-mouth and repeat business despite competition from platforms like WhatNot and Amazon. While acknowledging local competitors, the owner asserts that no single shop can offer such a variety of collectibles, ensuring ongoing demand.

The competitive edge lies in the owner's approachable nature and commitment to providing personalized service, setting the business apart from others while guaranteeing customer satisfaction. The application expresses confidence in turning modest investments into substantial profits, further justifying the need for financial support.

  • Funding Usage

Id put a deposit down on a space to move my stock and set up shop. I’d love to open a physical brick and mortar shop in Naperville Illinois where businesses are growing and where opportunity is. I’m going to need to get several things to make this happen including a boatload of stock. To open my own store I would need to use this money to get rarer items that draw people in, set some lights up to look more appealing, pay a graphic designer to make a storefront worthy logo for me. So I would need to use this money to buy furniture, shelves, desks, cabinets, and so much more including stock to open my shop.

  • Business Plan

I plan to open up my own shop here in Naperville. Right now I am operating solely online and while it’s profitable I know I could be doing better with more space and more stock. I plan to open up my own collectibles shop in Naperville and make it a jack of all trades. I want to sell everything from Star Wars Figures to Pokémon Cards and Funko Pops. The collector’s market is very high and everyone is always looking to start a new collection and I’m confident in the next 5 years that they’ll be going to my store to make that happen. I am a generational salesperson. Seems arrogant but I’ve learned that in order to be successful, you need to be kind to your customers, not your competitors. I’ve done business internationally that happened solely from word of mouth. I’ve been running my store solely online and I’m doing great but I know I could be doing better. I know I’m capable of turning hundreds into thousands and flipping stock better than any pop culture shop.

  • Self Identified Competition

WhatNot is my biggest pain right now. They’re taking a lot of the traffic from several e-commerce platforms and sites. My business hasn’t slowed down thus far and I know it would be wise to go with the flow and join WhatNot but I truly don’t think I need to to be successful. It’s a dumb live stream selling app that used to be more exclusive, but now they’re accepting anyone so I feel that the constant flow of traffic is going to clog up the app and it’s going to be more annoying and less appealing. I work with every buyer one on one and my star rating is fantastic. Amazon is another competitor but that’s just a given. Im able to get collectibles that they can’t and I haven’t seen any seller have these either, but they’re nearly everyone’s one stop shop. If Amazon doesn’t have it, no one does. So that could be taking sales from me, but I have a lot of very loyal buyers so Amazon can bite me. Any local pop culture collectible and comic shop is major competition but what helps and works in my favor is the wide variety of collectibles there are and it’s impossible for one store to have everything so there’s always a market and an interest in pop culture collectible shops. I’m a straight forward guy who’s down to earth and makes people feel at home. I’m approachable. I’m not going to shove collectibles in your face and goad you into buying things you don’t want because I won’t have to, anyone who walks into my shop or checks it out online, gets something. What makes me different is personally doing everything myself and making it work. I’ve seen success on a level that a lot of local shops who have been in business longer and have physical shops haven’t seen in the entirety of their time. My buyers deal with me one on one and I can always guarantee the best deals and best prices. I’m not scalping every penny out of people because I don’t have to.
