The Ruff Fluffery 853976062 | Government Grant Application

The Ruff Fluffery | Application Preview

The Ruff Fluffery is applying for government grants to fund the establishment of a grooming shop in the Elk Grove/Sacramento area. Currently operating as a mobile pet grooming service, they have a solid client base of 450 and anticipate significant growth upon converting to a physical shop with hired employees. The grant funding will be allocated for various infrastructure needs, including walls, electrical work, plumbing, and grooming equipment.

Their business plan involves hiring and training new groomers and bathers while promoting the newly converted shop. They aim to create a hybrid model that includes both shop and mobile services. A unique feature will be a self-wash room for clients, along with walk-in nail trims and mini grooming services. The business also plans to give back to the community by providing free grooming for police K9s and shelters for severely matted animals.

Since starting in January 2019, their mobile salon has been consistently booked for over a year, unable to accommodate new clients due to the limitations of their current model. There is a high demand for grooming services, especially since many clients prefer a reliable groomer over mobile options. Their reputation for quality, responsiveness, and care has driven growth primarily through word-of-mouth recommendations, with minimal advertising.

While competing with corporate grooming establishments like Petco and PetSmart, as well as local small businesses like Juan’s Groom Room, the Ruff Fluffery differentiates itself through a strong focus on personalized training. They emphasize the importance of skilled, empathetic grooming backed by extensive education, a contrast to the higher turnover and less training typically found in corporate settings. Their goal is to develop competent groomers who contribute to the welfare of pets, which they believe is essential for the community.

  • Funding Usage

We would like to put this funding towards building out our shop in Elk Grove/Sacramento area. We currently have a client base of 450 and it will exponentially grow when we convert to a shop and gain employees. It will go towards walls, electrical, plumbing, kennels, bathing tubs, grooming tables, washer and dryer, signage, flooring and paint, and so much more.

  • Business Plan

We will hire and train new groomers and bathers, advertise and promote our newly converted business. Eventually we will become a hybrid shop & mobile pet grooming salon after we hire and train enough employees. We will offer a self-wash bathing room where clients can come by at any time to give their pet a quick bath without needing to book for a full-service groom. Walk in nail trims and mini grooms also available. We will support our community by offering police k9s free grooms, and animals shelters for dogs and cats that are severely matted. Our mobile salon has been in business here in Sacramento county since January 2019. Between the two of us, we have been fully booked a year at a time since October 2019. We have not been able to accommodate new clients or grow since this time simply because we groom one dog at a time in the van, and one home at a time. There is constant demand for groomers. Most of our clients don’t require a mobile service, they just want a reliable groomer. We have high standing in our community for being reliable, responsive, caring, and upstanding groomers. A lot of our referrals come from word of mouth. We do minimal advertising since we have not been able to add anymore clients to our schedule for years. We desire a shop so that we can accommodate more of our community. This way we can hire employees and train them to our satisfaction. We would like a home base where people can come to us and get to know us even better. We provide clean, high quality work. It has been our constant goal to have a safe place for pet lovers to bring their beloved family members to. We take pride in that. Grooming is not just bathing and cutting hair. We provide a service that enhances the well being of animal and human. We see their pet more often than the vet. That means we find new lumps and bumps, growths, teeth decay, or any abnormalities that normally go unseen. Many times we have caught a cancerous growth and saved a life. Or a new cough that sounded a little too much like a heart problem. Pet grooming is necessary and our community needs above standard groomers that do it for the love of it.

  • Self Identified Competition

Petco and PetSmart are the corporate groomers around town. They have a lot of employees and long hours because of it. A small business competitor would be Juan’s Groom Room. We compare most to them as far as quality, service, cleanliness, and pricing. They are also fully booked a year at a time. While corporate grooming like Petco and PetSmart have a lot of employees and long hours, they also have a lot of turnover and the hiring process is usually quick with very little training. We have gotten a good amount of clients that came to us over the years because their dog was injured or mistreated by a newly ill-trained corporate groomer. Our personal approach to training is treating it like a years long+ apprenticeship program. There is a lot that comes with this training. It’s not just a simple haircut. We have to learn about the anatomy of the different breeds. Their skin. Their fur. The equipment, blades, scissors, shampoos and conditioners. We’ve put in years and years of education and continued education. This is the only way to ensure dogs do not get injured. Our goal is to train amazing, competent, empathetic groomers to take over the next generations to come. That’s the main difference between us.
