Nutmeg State Drain | Application Preview
Nutmeg State Drain is applying for government grants primarily to purchase new equipment, pay off existing debts from past purchases, and expand its workforce by hiring and training a new employee. The owner emphasizes that the goal is not business growth but sustainability, as this new hire will help maintain customer relationships for the future, especially as the owner ages.
The owner argues for funding approval by highlighting the business's consistent growth over the past 12 years, stating that essential services like theirs maintain demand regardless of economic challenges. The owner has been in the sewer business since 1999 and feels a pressing need to train someone to take over as she can no longer physically manage the demands of the job. She specifically mentions the need for a lift to safely handle heavy equipment and improve her efficiency.
In terms of competition, she cites Roto-Rooter as a major competitor that often overcharges customers. She believes that raising awareness of her services, coupled with her competitive pricing and commitment to quality work, will set her business apart. The owner aims to use the grant to enhance her operational capabilities and market presence, ultimately strengthening her business for the long term. She expresses gratitude for any consideration of her application.

Business Plan
I’m not trying to grow my business, I’m trying to sustain my business. Hiring another employee allows me to train them and have them earn my trust and my customer’s trust so when I can’t do the work anymore as I get older, I’ll have someone to maintain the clientele. Why not? Investors put their money into many businesses that end up failing. They would be putting money into a business that has proven growth year over year for the past 12 years. Everyone is struggling right now, but no matter anyone’s hardships-everyone uses the toilet. Everyone will need my services at some point, I will always be in demand. I just need help updating my equipment and getting ahead financially so I can have a greater edge over my competitions. I’ve been in this business since 1999. It’s all I’ve ever done. And I need the resources to be able to train someone to take my place. I didn’t have boys-I’m a girl maker and have 3 beautiful daughters. I don’t have anyone to take over my sewer business. I’m 51 years old and if my business is going to exist for another 30 years, I need to start training someone sooner rather than later. The machines I use are over 300 pounds that I heft in and out of the back of my van. The first thing I would buy with the grant is a lift to get them in and out and preserve my body a bit better. I could actually use more than the $50,000 but I’m afraid to ask for more. Even asking for this much is a reach, I’m well aware of that. Thank you for any consideration.

Self Identified Competition
I’ll tell you about one: Roto-Rooter. People don’t realize how much this company upcharges for their services. They work on commission as independent contractors and what I charge $650 for, they charge $4000 for (this would be a jet job). Id put more money into advertising my business so homeowners know my name just as much as they know roto-rooters. I don’t upcharge, I clean up after each job. You have no idea how many times I’ve done a job and they’ve had someone else there prior to try to do the same job and they leave it a mess. My prices are the best in the state, and my work is the best in the state.
