Aven's Serenity Garden | Application Preview

Aven's Serenity Garden is seeking a $10,000 government grant to enhance its operations and expand its business in the bonsai art scene. The funding will be allocated as follows: 15% for office supplies including shipping materials and promotional items, 35% for targeted social media promotions across platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Etsy to increase audience reach, and 50% for expanding the inventory with essential bonsai supplies such as pots, tools, and literature.

In the first three years, Aven plans to focus on building a loyal customer base while driving traffic to its Shopify website. From years four to five, the focus will shift toward promoting the business heavily and encouraging word-of-mouth referrals.

The application emphasizes the potential impact of the business on American bonsai culture, aiming to establish a unique American style of bonsai akin to international varieties. Aven’s Serenity Garden differentiates itself from competitors—such as Bonsai Mirai, Eisei-En Nursery, and Bonsai Empire—by maintaining a local, self-sustaining model and planning to open a bonsai nursery in South Carolina, with future expansions into larger cities and states.

The business proposes to foster local support and sustainability while growing the bonsai community in the U.S., positioning itself as a key player in the market.

  • Business Plan

years 1-3 will be primarily focused on growing my audience and customer base. During this time i would like to maintain a recurring customer base. My main goal is to drive customers and potential clients to my shopify website. The following years 4-5 will consist of expanding my presence on my sales channels via heavy promoting and encouraging customers to recommend us to their friends and family. Investors that Choose to fund me would be placing their time and investment into helping me to drive the bonsai art scene of America. My goal is to make bonsai not only more accessible but also to drive the American style of bonsai. Every other country has a bonsai style of their own with their domestic species. I believe that we are able to refine the term bonsai into a positive Americanized art form. I plan to do this by establishing a presence as a bonsai practitioner as well as a bonsai tool, supply and accessory shop to increase awareness.

  • Self Identified Competition

My top three competitors are bonsai Mirai, Eisei-En Nursery, and Bonsai Empire. These three companies primarily gain revenue via their online lessons and courses. Both Bonsai Mirai of Portland, Oregon and Eisei-En Nursery of Nashville, Tennessee acquire revenue via their plant and nursery material as well as their online shop. These Bonsai nurseries are helping to the expansion of Bonsai Within the States. They are run by Japanese Trained bonsai Professionals. Bonsai Empire acquires their revenue via collaborations with bonsai professionals such as the two that run the previously mentioned businesses. In addition, all of these companies push apparel to expand awareness about their businesses. I am different from my competitors because i intend to keep my business as a local self sustaining business. After my online business begins to thrive, I plan to open a bonsai nursery to supply the state of South Carolina with pre-bonsai and bonsai. 2-4 years after opening the nursery, i plan to open up plant and bonsai shops within larger cities such as Charleston and Columbia. I plan to repeat this process in multiple states to maintain the sustainability factor and support local businesses to expand my business across the United States.
