Treetop Coffee Shop | Application Preview
Treetop Coffee Shop is applying for government grants to fund the expansion of their business into a physical storefront, responding to community demand for a local coffee shop in a nearby neighborhood that currently lacks one. They seek to allocate $20,000 for essential equipment, including an espresso machine, refrigerators, and other necessary tools, with the remaining funds designated for renovations to meet health department standards.
The business plan emphasizes acquiring a brick-and-mortar space to enhance their existing catering operations, paving the way for growth through coffee roasting, wholesale distribution, and community educational programs. Treetop has confirmed local interest through polls indicating a strong desire for a coffee shop, thereby demonstrating market demand and their potential for success based on their experience with a mobile business model.
In terms of competition, Treetop primarily faces Starbucks, located three miles away, along with local contenders KBrew and Honeybee, which are situated about 20 minutes from the proposed location. Treetop distinguishes itself by being a local provider of specialty coffee, while the competition relies on mass production. They aim to be the sole local specialty coffee shop within a 15-mile radius.
Additionally, Treetop emphasizes its commitment to giving back to the community, fostering a network of local makers and small business supporters that further enhances their appeal and uniqueness in the marketplace.

Funding Usage
The funding raised will be used so that we can expand our business into a brick and mortar. The space we have picked out is in a neighborhood that has requested a local coffee shop, but does not have one close by. Twenty thousand dollars will be used to purchase essential equipment such as an espresso machine, batch brewer, refrigerators, commercial grinders, ice machine, and three compartment sink. The remaining amount will go towards getting the building up to health department standards and installing counter tops, plumbing, and electrical.

Business Plan
The first step is to acquire this brick and mortar space. The addition of a stand alone location to our current catering operations will provide greater growth and opportunity for us to do good in our community. Once we have a space we can expand our operations into roasting coffee, wholesale, and even educating the community through classes. We've established that there is a demand for our business in this specific community through their desire for our coffee in this retail space. A poll was taken and a coffee shop was in the top three for desires in the neighborhood. We have proven that we can be successful through our mobile business and are confident that adding a brick and mortar will only elevate that success.

Self Identified Competition
One of our top competitors is Starbucks, located 3 miles away from the neighborhood. They are of course nationally known and mass produced. Our other competitors are KBrew and Honeybee. Both of these shops have been around for about 6 years and are local to Knoxville. Both also serve specialty coffee. The main difference from Starbucks is that we are local and use specialty coffee rather than mass produced. Our advantage over KBrew and Honeybee is that neither of those shops are close to the neighborhood we plan to do business in. KBrew is located roughly 20 minutes away and Honeybee is even further. We would be the only local, specialty shop within roughly a 15 mile radius. Since we have started our business we have believed in the power of giving back to our community and those in need. Through that we have established a great network of makers, small business owners, families, and supporters in what we are doing. We think that engagement makes us unique in this space as well.
