Hawkmoth Barber | Application Preview
Hawkmoth Barber is seeking government grants to open a new barbershop in the South Broadripple neighborhood of Indianapolis. The founders aim to revive the barbershop culture that has diminished since the Covid-19 pandemic. Their vision is to create a welcoming space that connects the downtown, Broad Ripple, and Meridian Kessler areas.
The business will begin with the two owners operating the shop, with plans to hire up to four additional barbers as the business grows. Community engagement is a priority; they intend to participate in local events and collaborate with barber school students to foster new talent. Building a reputation through excellent service and word-of-mouth promotion is central to their strategy, as well as supporting local artisans by offering their hair and body care products.
The founders emphasize the significance of their identity as a woman-owned and war veteran-owned business rooted in the local community. They are passionate about revitalizing the area's cultural hub, the barbershop, to unite and empower the neighborhoods.
In terms of competition, they acknowledge local barbershops like Warfleigh and Black Orchid but believe their approachable mindset and commitment to inclusivity set them apart. They bring a unique ability to cut all hair types, catering to the diverse community in South Broad Ripple, ensuring that everyone feels welcome and valued in their shop.

Funding Usage
We plan to use our funding to open a new barbershop in the South Broadripple neighborhood in Indianapolis. Due to Covid-19 there has been a decline in the culture around barbershops that we wish to rebuild in what we see to be a new booming neighborhood. We plan to unite both the downtown, broad ripple, and meridian Kessler neighborhoods in an eclectic space that will be a quick staple in the culture of the community.

Business Plan
We plan to start small with myself and my business partner owning and operating the barbershop. As business grows we intend to hire up to four more barbers that share our like minded ideas and talents to continue to grow ourselves in the community. We plan to do community outreach through local events and work with barber school students to nurture the new upcoming barbers of Indianapolis as well. We will grow mainly through a superb reputation and word of mouth. We also would like to lift up other local artisans by carrying local hair care goods and body care. We should be invested in because we are a woman owned and war veteran owned Indianapolis local business. I have grown up in the surrounding areas and have a passion for both what I do and the culture of Indianapolis. We have a strong desire to unite and empower the neighborhoods through what has always been seen as a cultural hub- The Local Barbershop.

Self Identified Competition
Warfleigh - a barbershop on Broadripple Ave. Brick and Mortar located in the new bottle works building. Black Orchid Barbers on Indiana Ave. We are humble owners. We know our craft and how it can build up a sense of community and don’t discriminate or have a desire to ‘out cool’ anyone. We want everyone in our shop to feel included and cared for. Our shop will only add to the community it represents. We also have the technical ability to cut all textures of hair and cater to the variety of cultures that the neighborhood of South Broad Ripple represents.
