Active Physical Therapy | Application Preview
Active Physical Therapy is seeking government grants to address a significant financial downturn and ongoing rent issues stemming from the challenges faced in 2020. The business reported a loss of $175,000 that year, compounded by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which drastically reduced patient visits due to the shelter-in-place order.
The application highlights the personal struggles of the owner, whose family faced a medical crisis when their daughter underwent brain surgery, requiring extensive care during a time when operational challenges were already high. Despite receiving Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) funds, the business is nearing financial exhaustion, leading the owner to consider closing despite a strong desire to support their staff and maintain the business.
To counter the difficulties, Active Physical Therapy plans to enhance marketing efforts and leverage its strong community reputation and personalized care. The business differentiates itself from larger competitors like ATI and Drayer by focusing on individualized treatment rather than high-volume patient management.
Funding is essential for the clinic to continue its operations and remain a valuable healthcare provider in Central Ohio, particularly in supporting those without health insurance through partnerships like the one with the Columbus Free Clinic. The owner stresses that these funds are vital to sustain the business until the situation stabilizes.

Business Plan
We plan to increase marketing efforts in the community by leveraging our excellent reputation and care we provide My story starts in February of 2020 with my 4 year old daughter having brain surgery following a sudden and rapid increase in her seizure activity. My wife and I were struggling to provide 24 hour care for her during her 60+ seizures per day. She was admitted to Cincinnati Children’s hospital and I stayed with her daily and nightly. As if it weren’t difficult enough to run a business during this, on March 13, Governor Dewine called for a shelter-in-place order, which cut our volume 90% overnight. While we have secured PPP funds, it has only been used for payroll and we will exhaust the funds soon as business remains hindered. I have contemplated shutting down on several occasions but I do not want to let my staff down and face almost certain personal bankruptcy. I have reduced my pay by 66% and have worked every weekend to make ends meet, as we are now looking at significant medical debt as well. If you read our google reviews, we provide excellent care to our patients and are involved heavily in our community. These funds would assure that we remain a steady presence in central Ohio. One of our outreach missions is a collaboration with the Columbus Free Clinic, which provides care for people in our community without health insurance. Our ability to remain viable will be achieved with further funding until vaccines can change the way people access our business.
