Salt City Discs | Application Preview
Salt City Discs is applying for government grants to launch a disc golf retail business, outlining several key areas for funding utilization. The funds will be allocated for essential startup costs, including inventory, shelving, furniture, cash registers, displays, as well as advertising and signage.
The business plan emphasizes community engagement, with plans to collaborate with the city on creating a new disc golf course while renovating an existing one. There are intentions to host tournaments and establish a youth league to attract younger participants. Moreover, Salt City Discs aims to partner with local facilities serving individuals with disabilities to provide classes and recreational opportunities, promoting fitness through disc golf. The long-term vision includes opening an indoor disc golf facility to enable year-round play and expanding to additional retail locations in towns with multiple disc golf courses.
The rationale for funding approval is rooted in the growing popularity of disc golf, recognized for being an accessible and affordable sport that appeals to individuals of all ages and backgrounds. The initiative aims to encourage local families, particularly those in low-income brackets, to engage in physical activity through disc golf. Additionally, special efforts will be made to include elderly and disabled individuals, providing them with fun and engaging outdoor experiences.
In terms of competition, Salt City Discs identifies a gap in the market, as the closest disc golf shop is over an hour away. While larger retailers like Dunhams Sports and Walmart offer some disc golf products, their stock is limited and of lower quality. Salt City Discs intends to provide a wider selection of high-quality discs and create personalized shopping experiences that online retailers cannot match, capitalizing on local demand for such a store. Their unique position, community focus, and commitment to inclusivity will set them apart in a growing market.

Business Plan
I plan on growing by working closely with the city in developing a new disc golf course and renovating one of the existing courses here in town. I also plan on doing tournaments and working on starting a youth league to get younger people interested in disc golf. I would like to work with local facilities that have people with disabilities to do some classes or just take groups of them out to get some exercise and teach them to throw some discs. I also plan to grow big enough that I can open an indoor disc golf course so that people can play year round when the weather is too cold or is not playable weather. I also would like to open a couple more stores in a couple other towns that have more than one disc golf course. Disc golf is a growing sport in the past few years I have seen its popularity skyrocket. Its great exercise and people of all ages can do. I plan to work closely with the community to help this sport grow, to help get people more active. Hutchinson Kansas has a lot of low income families and this is a sport that very cheap to get in to that parents can not spend a fortune to get their kids in to keep them more active. Its also great for the elderly and disabled as well. I want to eventually be able to offer to take groups of the elderly or the disabled out to get them active and give them something new and fun to look forward to.

Self Identified Competition
The nearest Disc golf store to me is about an hour drive from my town in our area we have about 30 disc golf courses some of which are closer to us than having to drive to Wichita. Dunhams Sports, and Walmart also sells discs but they have a very small selection of discs and they are sub par discs. The other is online sales. Location is the biggest difference. There is not a store within 60 miles of where we will be located. Dunhams and Walmart doesnt have the selection that I will have and the quality of product as well. I will also be taking groups of elderly and disabled people out to show them the sport and teach them a few things. After speaking with a lot of players in the area they would rather come to the store than buy online that way they can hold the disc in their hand and not have to pay for and wait on shipping.
