Journey of the Shadow | Application Preview
Journey of the Shadow is seeking government grants to support its growth in the literary field. The funds will be allocated for publication costs, merchandise production, and advertising efforts. The business aims to attend regional conventions and enhance its online visibility, particularly through targeted marketing strategies.
The core mission is to highlight the rich literary talent in Mississippi, building on the legacy of notable authors from the state while also introducing genres like science fiction and urban fantasy, which are not commonly associated with Mississippi. The funding will enable the business to elevate its representation of the state and attract interest from a broader audience.
Currently, there is no direct competition for Journey of the Shadow within Mississippi, although competitors exist online, primarily on platforms like Amazon. Notable competitors include authors Billy Dering, Carlos Santos, and C.E. Bradley.
A unique aspect of this business is its identity as an African American-owned enterprise. Journey of the Shadow seeks not only to succeed commercially but also to inspire other African Americans and minorities to pursue their aspirations and make a positive impact within their communities.

Business Plan
Considering the pandemic remains on the downside, I plan to re-start taking my business to regional conventions and continue expanding my brand's visibility and therefore potential customer base. Additionally, increase online presence and traffic by investing into demographic curated click funnels. From William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, Richard Wright and others, my business is centered upon bringing attention to and reinforcing the wealth of literary talent in Mississippi. With respect to “Journey of the Shadow”, I intend to expand upon this value by adding both science fiction and urban fantasy to the roster—domains of literature that Mississippi is not particularly well-known for. My business aims to radically change that. With the financial support requested, my business will be placed in a better position to represent the state and drive positive interest from abroad.
-
Self Identified Competition
With respect to the state of Mississippi, I have not (as of yet) discovered a direct competitor in the industry my business is established in. Much of my competition—being science fiction and/or fantasy writers, resides primarily online and on the Amazon marketplace (where my product is listed). Three writers competing against me are Billy Dering, Carlos Santos and C.E. Bradley. As mentioned, my business resides in Mississippi, however this is also an African American owned business. So, an additional agenda is to use my brand “Journey of the Shadow” to influence and inspire other African Americans and minorities to pursue their goals and positively impact their communities.
