Hartford Area Roller Derby 812899131 | Government Grant Application

Hartford Area Roller Derby | Application Preview

Hartford Area Roller Derby is applying for government grants to address financial challenges exacerbated by the pandemic. With no games played in the past two seasons, the organization has lost its main revenue source, leading to a monthly shortfall of $500 to $800 for rink rent. The funds sought will help cover these rent costs until public games can resume in Spring 2022.

The organization actively works to recruit new members through regular rookie classes and fundraising efforts to raise awareness about their activities. They emphasize their commitment to supporting women and ensuring equitable access to roller derby while engaging in community service and donation drives for other nonprofits.

In terms of competition, Hartford Area Roller Derby faces nearby leagues such as Connecticut Roller Derby, Shoreline Roller Derby, and Western Mass Roller Derby. However, their competitive advantage lies in offering a balanced environment that combines ranked competition with a welcoming atmosphere, attracting rookies who might struggle in more cutthroat settings or those seeking a supportive yet competitive experience.

  • Funding Usage

Due to the pandemic, we were not able to practice or play for the past two seasons. Our main source of revenue is games during our season. Our membership has also declined since we started up again last week. We project that we will be $500 to $800 short each month for our rink rent. We would like to use this money to cover our rent shortage until we can play public games again in Spring 2022.

  • Business Plan

We continue to recruit and hold rookie classes two to three times per year and we fundraise to cover advertising costs to get the public aware of who we are and what we do. Our organization supports women in our community and is dedicated to making roller derby accessible and equitable. We do a lot of community service and donation drives for other nonprofits that we support.

  • Self Identified Competition

Our top 3 closest leagues that "compete" with us for membership are Connecticut Roller Derby, Shoreline Roller Derby, and Western Mass Roller Derby. Out of the three leagues in CT, ours is known for having the best blend of ranked competition yet a welcoming and nurturing environment. CTRD is ranked higher and is extremely cutthroat; as a result, many rookies who start with them and couldn't make it through their rookie program come to us because we spend a bit more time investing in our rookies. Conversely, Shoreline Roller Derby is very welcoming and nurturing, but they are not ranked. Therefore, those looking to play competitively will often transfer from them to us.
