1. PROJECT COVER INFORMATION
Project Title:
Lasting Engraving Capacity Expansion and Working Capital Stabilization Project
Applicant Organization:
Lasting Engraving DBA (laser engraving and cutting business)
Project Director / PI:
Owner-Operator, Lasting Engraving DBA
Funding Usage:
Working capital and equipment maintenance/new equipment to support expansion
2. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY / ABSTRACT (1/2-1 page)
Problem / Need:
Small, specialized manufacturing and personalization businesses such as laser engraving shops often face two linked challenges: (1) tight working capital caused by variable order volume, material purchasing needs, and customer payment timing, and (2) equipment wear-and-tear that can lead to downtime, delayed orders, and lost revenue. For an owner-operated engraving business, even short interruptions can reduce the ability to take on larger projects, meet rush timelines, or serve repeat clients consistently. In addition, growth beyond a local market requires added production capacity, reliable equipment performance, and the ability to market and fulfill orders outside the immediate service area.
Target Population / Sector:
Primary beneficiaries include local and regional customers seeking custom engraving and cutting services, including individuals, schools, sports teams, small businesses, and organizations that need trophies, awards, signage, branded items, and personalized gifts. Secondary beneficiaries include the local economy through continued small business retention, local sourcing, and job creation potential as demand increases.
Proposed Solution:
Grant funds will be used to stabilize operations through working capital support and to strengthen production reliability through equipment maintenance and/or acquisition of new equipment. This investment will allow Lasting Engraving DBA to increase capacity, reduce turnaround time, maintain consistent quality, and expand offerings beyond laser engraving over the next five years. With improved capacity and reliability, the business will be positioned to serve customers outside Utah via shipping and remote ordering while maintaining the customer service and product quality that drives repeat business.
Key Activities:
- Purchase materials and cover essential operating costs to maintain steady production and fulfill customer orders without cash flow disruptions.
- Perform preventative maintenance, repairs, and/or replacement of critical laser-related components to reduce downtime and protect quality standards.
- Acquire new or upgraded equipment that supports expanded capabilities and higher throughput (for example, improved laser capacity, additional cutting/engraving capability, or complementary equipment that broadens product offerings).
- Strengthen sales reach beyond Utah through improved fulfillment readiness and a scalable approach to remote customer projects.
Expected Outcomes:
- Increased production reliability and reduced delays through improved equipment performance and maintenance practices.
- Higher sales capacity and expanded customer reach beyond Utah, supported by the ability to handle more orders and a broader service offering.
- Continued customer retention and growth driven by consistent quality, fair pricing, and a high-trust service model.
3. PROJECT GOALS & OBJECTIVES
Overall Goal:
Strengthen the operational stability and production capacity of Lasting Engraving DBA so the business can expand services beyond laser engraving, serve customers outside Utah, and sustain long-term growth.
Specific Objectives (SMART):
Objective 1:
Within the grant period, improve production continuity by implementing a maintenance and replacement schedule for key equipment, reducing the likelihood of unplanned downtime and missed deadlines.
Objective 2:
Within the next 12 to 24 months, increase the volume of completed customer projects by expanding capacity through equipment upgrades and more reliable workflow, while maintaining the quality standards customers consistently report.
Objective 3:
Within the next five years, expand service offerings beyond laser engraving by adding complementary capability and positioning the business to serve customers outside Utah through remote ordering and shipping-based fulfillment.
4. PROJECT DESCRIPTION / PROGRAM NARRATIVE
Project Overview:
Lasting Engraving DBA is a laser engraving and cutting business serving the Logan, Utah area with customized products, engraving services, and project-based work for repeat and referral customers. The business model is relationship-driven and quality-focused, with an emphasis on fair pricing, careful workmanship, and consistent communication. The proposed project strengthens the foundation of the business by ensuring adequate working capital for smooth operations and by investing in equipment maintenance and new equipment to expand capacity and services.
Approach / Strategy:
This approach works because laser engraving businesses depend on precision equipment and predictable operations. Working capital ensures that materials can be purchased when needed, orders can be scheduled efficiently, and the business can accept jobs that might otherwise be declined due to cash flow constraints. Equipment maintenance and upgrades protect the core value proposition: high-quality output and reliable turnaround. As reliability improves, the business can confidently pursue larger orders, higher-volume work, and customers outside the immediate region.
Key Activities:
- Operational stabilization through working capital to support purchasing raw materials, consumables, and other essential operating needs that keep production moving.
- Preventative maintenance and repair of engraving/cutting equipment to maintain consistent output quality, reduce rejects, and avoid project delays.
- Equipment upgrades or additions that increase throughput and enable new product lines, supporting the five-year plan to expand beyond laser engraving.
- Expansion readiness for out-of-state customers through improved capacity, packaging/fulfillment capability, and consistent production scheduling.
Innovation / Best Practices Used:
The project emphasizes preventative maintenance (a best practice in small manufacturing to reduce downtime), quality control consistency (critical for repeat business and referrals), and capacity-building investment to scale services responsibly rather than overextending operations. The business also leverages a relationship-based service model, which is especially effective in customization industries where repeat purchases and word-of-mouth referrals drive growth.
5. COMPETITIVE POSITION
Competition:
The main local competitor identified is Al's Trophies in Logan, which has been established longer and has stronger name recognition. Other competitors exist primarily in the Salt Lake City area or out of state, which can create longer lead times and less personalized service for customers in the Logan region.
Competitive Edge:
Customer feedback indicates that Lasting Engraving DBA delivers higher perceived quality than other engravers customers have used, with fair pricing and a better customer experience. The business differentiates itself through trustworthiness, consistent communication, willingness to collaborate on custom projects, and dependable follow-through. This combination supports strong customer retention and repeat work, which is a major advantage in a niche service market.
6. ORGANIZATIONAL CAPACITY
Organization Mission:
Provide high-quality laser engraving and cutting services with fair pricing, dependable turnaround, and a customer-first experience built on trust and craftsmanship.
Relevant Experience:
The owner-operator has established a strong customer base in a specialized field, demonstrating the ability to deliver quality outcomes in a niche market. The business has successfully competed against longer-established providers by emphasizing product quality and customer service.
Systems & Infrastructure:
Operations are currently centered on laser engraving/cutting equipment and the hands-on expertise of the owner-operator. The grant-funded focus on working capital and equipment maintenance/new equipment directly strengthens core infrastructure and improves the ability to scale responsibly.
7. BUDGET SUMMARY
Budget Summary:
Grant funds will be used for (1) working capital to stabilize operations and support order fulfillment, and (2) equipment maintenance and/or purchase of new equipment to expand capacity and broaden services beyond laser engraving.
8. BUDGET JUSTIFICATION (NARRATIVE)
Working Capital:
Working capital will be used to maintain uninterrupted operations, including purchasing job materials and consumables, handling routine operating expenses tied to fulfilling customer orders, and managing timing gaps between project start, delivery, and payment. This improves the ability to accept and complete more projects without delays.
Equipment Maintenance / New Equipment:
Funds will support preventative maintenance, repairs, and replacement of worn components to reduce downtime and protect output quality. If new equipment is purchased, it will be selected to directly increase production capability and/or expand into additional services beyond laser engraving, aligning with the five-year growth plan and enabling the business to serve a wider geographic market.
9. SUSTAINABILITY PLAN
Post-Grant Funding Strategy:
After grant support, the business will sustain improvements through increased revenue from higher throughput, fewer production interruptions, and expanded customer reach beyond Utah. Strong customer retention (repeat buyers and referrals) provides a practical pathway for sustained growth, especially when supported by consistent quality and reliable delivery.
Revenue or Cost Recovery:
The investment is expected to pay back through increased completed orders, improved efficiency, and reduced costs associated with downtime, delayed projects, and equipment failures. Expanded services can also diversify revenue streams and reduce dependence on a single product category.
10. RISK MANAGEMENT
Key Risks:
Equipment failure, unexpected repair costs, and downtime that reduce the ability to meet deadlines. Local market saturation or stronger brand recognition from long-standing competitors. Cash flow strain during periods of uneven demand or while expanding beyond the local market.
Mitigation Strategies:
Prioritize preventative maintenance and create a basic replacement plan for high-wear parts to reduce unplanned downtime. Maintain strong customer communication and quality control standards to protect repeat business and referrals. Use working capital strategically to ensure materials and essential costs are covered during demand fluctuations, allowing the business to continue accepting and delivering projects consistently. Expand beyond Utah in a controlled manner that matches production capacity, avoiding overcommitment while building a reliable remote fulfillment process.

Self Identified Competition
Al's Trophies- they have been around a lot longer then I have and with that they are more know. This is the only real competitor I really have in Logan. All of the others are in the Salt Lake City area or out of state. The feed back that I get from my customers is that I develop a better quality of product then other engravers they have been to along with fair pricing. I am also told that they really enjoy working with me for that in itself they would come back for future projects. I am also told that they really enjoy working with me and for that reason they will come back for any future project they may have.
