Big Island Welding | Application Preview
Big Island Welding is seeking government grants to secure a dedicated workshop space for custom metal fabrication, focusing on gates and other metal items. The funding will help move the business out of the owner's garage and into a larger, more efficient location.
The owner plans to leverage a strong local network for word-of-mouth promotion, confident that customer satisfaction will drive demand. The rural community in Hawaii is experiencing growth in agriculture and construction, creating a continued need for metalwork services. To meet this demand, the owner intends to hire and train employees.
The application emphasizes the owner's passion for metalwork, which ensures long-term commitment to the business. The owner believes that the specialized nature of the work—custom fabrication of gates and farm equipment—will remain relevant and cannot be easily automated. This niche market presents significant growth opportunities.
In terms of competition, the owner recognizes three main competitors in the region but differentiates the business by focusing exclusively on custom fabrication rather than general machining services. This specialization allows for unique, artistic designs that enhance both functionality and aesthetic appeal for homes and farms, setting Big Island Welding apart in the local market.

Funding Usage
I plan on using funding to secure a location and set up a fully functional workshop where I can have the space I need to further my custom fabrication of gates and other items that require shop space.

Business Plan
I plan on using my network of clients in the community to spread word of mouth reviews of my work, with many happy clients, a good recommendation goes a long way. Many folks hear about my work and reach out to hire me, I have unlimited potential to continue growing my business here on Hawaii island, we are a mainly rural agricultural based economy with an influx of new construction projects therefore the need for metal work is and will continue to be in high demand. I plan to meet the rising demand for work by taking on employees that I will pick and train myself. This request for funding is key in my ideas for expansion in that with funding I will be able to secure a shop location and move my business out of my home garage and into a larger more productive work space. I believe I am a great opportunity for an investment for several reasons, the first being that I am passionate about my work. This fact sets in stone my commitment to this career. I will not burn out over time, tire, or give up my goals of expansion and success. Metal work is my niche and I will stick with this until I retire. The second reason being that my chosen career path will not become obsolete. The type of welding I provide cannot be replaced by robotic welding machines. The fabrication of custom steel and aluminum gates and farm equipment is in high demand here where I live, with construction projects taking over our rural lands, I have unlimited opportunity to expand and grow, and even so I still won’t be able to meet all the growing needs of our rapidly expanding island economy.

Self Identified Competition
My top three competitors are Aloha Machining and Welding Simao Machining and Welding Rand R machining and welding All three of these shops provide much needed welding and machining services to east Hawaii. They are reputable and fair in their pricing and I am proud to share the field with them. My small business differs from the other Metal shops in that I am strictly a custom fabrication and welder and do not provide machining work. I am focused on the specific niche of building farm equipment, and custom gates for newly built homes, with an artistic touch. I work closely with the home owners or contractions to build not only a functional gate, but beautiful custom designs that really accentuate the uniqueness of our lives here in Hawaii. My custom gate work is not just functional metal that protects your investment, but my builds become the final touch after construction, and the first thing you see when pulling up to a farm or newly built home. My custom gates provide a functional yet aesthetically pleasing welcome to any home or farm. My competitors do any work from machining vehicle parts to vehicle repairs where as I specialize in the fabrication of new custom metal design needs for farm and home owners, and do not work on vehicle parts.
