Kelly Hardware | Application Preview
Kelly Hardware is seeking $80,000 in government grant funding to support various operational aspects including payroll, rent, insurance, and store and equipment improvements. The business, established less than five years ago in Iowa, faces financial challenges during off-peak seasons, making it difficult to manage expenses. The requested funds will help modernize their facility, replace outdated equipment, and expand inventory, allowing them to better compete with larger retailers like Menards and Home Depot.
In their grant application, Kelly Hardware emphasizes their unique advantage of personalized, face-to-face customer service, which fosters customer loyalty in their small-town community. They also highlight their commitment to local impact through annual donations of paint to schools, something larger chains do not typically offer. Overall, the funding would greatly assist in sustaining and enhancing the future of this small business.

Business Plan
Building additions/expansions, equipment modernizations, solar conversion, inventory additions. We are a small business in Iowa, less than 5 years old. During off seasons such as fall and winter, our expenses tend to outweigh our profits, and that most often puts us in the hole financially. We are also looking to modernize our facility to keep up with the times and to attract more customers. It is difficult for us to make our rent payments during the down seasons in the year. Our equipment used for store use is old and dated and in need of replacement in many areas. Any assistance we could get would be greatly appreciated for the possible future of our small business. Thank you so much in advance.

Self Identified Competition
We are a small town retail business, and our main competitors are franchises like Menards, home depot, Ace Hardware, and the like Ace Hardware, and other establishments related to that who can purchase their inventory in large volumes to be able to sell them at a better price. We find it hard to compete with these "big box" stores. We pride ourselves in the face-to-face retail experience, offering knowledge assistance, and sometimes physical help to get our customers set up with their needs, keep them satisfied, and most importantly ensure that they will be repeat business for us. We Believe that the face-to-face personal interactions with our customer base is what makes us the preferred choice of small town customers. We hope and try very hard to achieve the retention of their business on a week to week and month to month basis. We will annually donate many gallons of paint to our local schools. That is not something that you can get from the big box stores.
