Narrative Therapy & Company, LLC 87-1060409 | Government Grant Application

Narrative Therapy & Company, LLC | Application Preview

Narrative Therapy & Company, LLC is a minority-owned business in the mental health sector seeking government grants to address stigma surrounding mental health services among BIPOC communities. The funding will support quarterly educational events, partnerships with community agencies, free counseling for low-income BIPOC families, and annual retreats, with a focus on both adults and children. The owner, a licensed clinician and school counselor, aims to create a successful and sustainable practice.

In the next five years, the business aspires to be a leading mental health agency in South Carolina and eventually expand into North Carolina and Georgia. Success will be measured through specific growth targets.

The application emphasizes the need for funding to combat the historical inaccessibility of mental health services for minorities and to alter perceptions of mental health in African American communities. As a woman of color and a small business owner, the applicant believes that supporting her initiative represents an investment in transformative change within the mental health field.

While larger tech companies like Cerebral, Betterhelp, and Talkspace pose competition, the applicant differentiates her practice by prioritizing person-centered therapy and focusing on breaking down stigma, thereby providing exceptional care to underserved communities.

  • Funding Usage

As a minority business owner in the mental health field, I am seeking to reduce the stigma around receiving mental health services to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous People of Color). I plan to do this by offering quarterly educational community events, partnering with community agencies and stakeholders to provide mental health resources/training, offering free individual/group counseling services to BIPOC in low income homes, and annual mental health retreats to clients. I am a licensed mental health clinician and a K-12 certified school counselor, so all funding will be used to aid in providing the above as well as offering the same for children and adolescents. As I am early on in my business, I am looking for grants at this time to ensure the success and longevity of my mental health practice.

  • Business Plan

Within the next 5 years, I plan for my mental health practice to be the preeminent agency for mental health. Not only will we be known for providing excellent mental health care to the state of SC, but we will have also expanded services to multiple states (NC and GA). Our agency will be able to compete with world renowned mental health companies and we will change how mental health is perceived to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous People of Color). Growth of our business will be measured with goals/targets to meet each year to reach our desired outcome. Investors should invest in myself and my company because the mental health industry has a history of not being widely accessible to minorities and there is a strong stigma around mental health in the African American community. I have plans to help change how mental health is perceived in minority communities and erasing some of the stigma around receiving mental health services. As a woman of color, licensed therapist and small business owner I know that historically I may not have been given an opportunity like this- however I am multi passionate about mental health and making a lasting difference in the field. An investment in me is an investment in the change of the mental health field.

  • Self Identified Competition

I would not say that I have direct competitors, but big tech mental health companies such as Cerebral, Betterhelp and Talkspace make it hard for smaller agencies like myself to be sustainable. They have the marketing, resources and reach to provide mental health services to the masses. However, solid mental health practices are not always the foundation of these companies. I am different from my competitors because I am interested in changing the narrative around mental health and allowing access to exceptional care to communities and people in need. I am a person centered mental health therapist and I believe that I can change the scope of the mental health field through a targeted approach the eliminates some of the stigma around mental health.
