Kaealanis Hula Ohana BE808 | Application Preview
Kaealanis Hula Ohana BE808 is seeking government grants to expand its business and enhance its educational offerings related to Hawaiian culture. The funding would be used to purchase Ipu for teaching students how to make traditional implements, acquire materials for sewing costumes, secure additional rental days for their space to accommodate more dancers, and create signs and advertising for their workshops. The organization aims to open its workshops to the public, sharing cultural knowledge and practices.
In the next five years, the business plans to enrich its dancers' skills through hands-on educational experiences connected to Hawaiian culture and the broader Polynesian triangle. They propose organizing field trips to Tahiti, Fiji, and the Cook Islands to deepen connections to their ancestry.
The application highlights the urgent need to preserve the Polynesian culture, which is at risk of fading away. By securing funding, the organization seeks to educate dancers, families, and the community about sustainable lifestyles while keeping cultural practices alive.
Kaealanis Hula Ohana positions itself not as a competitor to other hula halau, but rather as a collaborative entity, emphasizing that they do not focus on competition but on community and shared cultural education. Their unique approach includes teaching costume-making and the intricate process of creating traditional instruments, coupled with strong community involvement and service initiatives. This commitment to education and service sets them apart from other hula schools that primarily focus on dance performance.

Funding Usage
We want to expand our business and our knowledge on the Hawaiian culture. Money to buy Ipu to show how to correctly make their own implements. Money to buy more materials to sew costumes for our students. Money to get more days at our location to add more dancers. I want to open up our workshop to the public to share our culture. Money for signs and advertising. I’m not good at writing but I’m good at teaching our kids and family the way we were taught. I work hard I give countless hours to not even make ends meet. There is so much to share with those who want to learn and I just need the jump to get us there financially.

Business Plan
In the next 5 years we plan on expanding our dancers knowledge and skill but implementing more hands on educational practice of Hawaiian culture as well as other cultures in our Polynesian triangle. Taking our students on educational field trips to our neighboring island of Tahiti, Fiji, and Cook Islands to name a few to help the to connect to each and to continue to perpetuate our Polynesians ancestors and Kupuna. Our Polynesian culture is slowing disappearing. In order to perpetuate our culture we need to continue to educate and share with our dancers, families, community, and visitor what was passed down from generations to generations of teaching. The cultural practices and teachings we offer will help to educate those how to live a sustainable lifestyle as well as continue to keeping our Polynesian culture alive.

Self Identified Competition
We don’t look at other hula halau as competitors. They are teaching the culture. As long as they continue to share I’m okay with that. We are non competitive halau that is what separates us. We don’t have the advertisement like Halau’s that are on tv. We are a non competitive halau. Other halau’s only teach the dancing. We teach how to make your own costumes. We teach how to make the Ipu implement. We take the kids to pick bamboo and how to make their pu’ili with the bamboo that they harvested. Our Halau is like family we always come together to support each other. We do a lot of community service and we are deeply connected to the AmVets and the military. We offer help in anyway food drives for many different causes. Beach clean ups, school maintenance. We strive to help the community, veterans and anyone that is in need.
