Breakwater Marine Surveys 88-3639393 | Government Grant Application

Breakwater Marine Surveys | Application Preview

Breakwater Marine Surveys is applying for government grants to support the acquisition of essential equipment, pay off existing loans, purchase work clothes, cover website expenses, and ensure salary coverage during the initial startup phase.

The business plan focuses on achieving several professional certifications, including Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Safety Professional, ISO 9001 Lead Auditor, and OSHA Trainer. Additionally, there are plans to establish a testing laboratory specializing in asbestos and heavy metals commonly found in shipyards, as well as to obtain USCG certification to serve as a third-party auditor for fishing and towing vessels.

The proposal highlights the significance of the Marine Chemist certification, which is rare and regulated by federal agencies such as OSHA, the US Navy, and the US Coast Guard. Currently, there are only 80-90 Marine Chemists in the world, and the applicant stands out as the second female to achieve this certification in the last century. This accomplishment underscores her determination and capability in a traditionally male-dominated field and positions her business as a critical service provider in the industry.

In terms of competition, there are two other Marine Chemist companies in the area, each with two chemists. As the older chemists retire, the applicant aims to fill this gap in local service provision. The applicant's unique background in the Coast Guard is expected to provide a competitive edge, enabling the expansion of services offered and future hiring opportunities within the company.

  • Business Plan

I will be pursuing the completion of becoming a Certified Industrial Hygienist, a Certified Safety Professional, an ISO 9001 Lead Auditor and OSHA Trainer. I will be pursuing the opening of a testing lab for testing asbestos and heavy metals encountered in the shipyard. I will be pursuing USCG certification for becoming a third-party auditor for fishing vessels and/or towing vessels. My certification as a Marine Chemist is a highly selective certification with only about 80-90 Marine chemists in the world. Marine Chemists are written into federal regulations (OSHA, US Navy, US Coast Guard) as a requirement for authorizing hot work and/or entry into confined spaces on ships while in US ports or places. A Marine Chemist is a highly sought contractor and ensures that the military and commercial shipping industry continues to produce. Becoming a Marine Chemist was not an easy feat for me. There has only been one female marine chemist ever certified in the last 100 years and an have become the second. The job is hard, and male dominated. I believe that my ability to surpass the gender inequality and still perform and pass certification shows my perseverance to strive towards and meet my goals. This is what will make my business successful.

  • Self Identified Competition

There are two other Marine Chemist companies in my area. Each company has two chemists totally four chemists in the area. Two of the chemists are 70-80 years old and are retiring soon. This will leave a gap of two chemists in the area, and I will be fulfilling one of those gaps. My prior experience and background in the Coast Guard will allow me to provide more services. This will allow me to expand my company into different markets and hire employees someday. (see my 5 year goal above).
