Block Cancer 88-4007946 | Government Grant Application

Block Cancer | Application Preview

Block Cancer is seeking government grants to expand its mission and brand presence focused on supporting the cancer community. The funding will be allocated to hiring a website builder, engaging artists for merchandise design, compensating cancer patients for product testing, creating a brand identity with a graphic designer, and employing a marketing team.

The organization, established following a notable charity swim that raised over $660,000 for cancer research, honors the founder's late father, Ted, who succumbed to pancreatic cancer. The founder's vision is to grow Block Cancer into a movement over the next five years that includes sponsoring athletes, conducting grief retreats, and developing quality products for individuals impacted by cancer.

The target audience consists of cancer patients, their loved ones, and anyone passionate about supporting cancer-related causes through unique, aesthetically pleasing merchandise rather than traditional offerings. These customers seek to find beauty and meaning in their purchases while also supporting a worthy cause.

Block Cancer distinguishes itself by donating 100% of net profits to cancer research, ensuring that contributions support tangible progress. Additionally, the brand focuses on delivering high-quality, artistic products that resonate with a younger, vibrant clientele. The holistic experience aims to instill calmness and confidence, setting Block Cancer apart from limited competitors. Grant funding will enable the brand to create a polished image that enhances awareness and further its impactful mission.

  • Business Plan

Block Cancer started as a charity swim in the summer of 2021 raising funds for cancer research and clinical trials. On September 25, 2021 I became the first woman to swim the 12.5 miles from mainland Rhode Island to Block Island. The Block Cancer swim raised over $660,000 for cancer research and clinical trials. I dedicated the swim to my late father, Ted, who lost his battle to pancreatic cancer two months before I completed the swim. He is the reason behind the entire Block Cancer movement, and everything Block Cancer does is in honor of him and all of those who have lost their hard-fought battle to cancer. In just one year, we have grown tremendously. I want to continue that growth by way of introducing Block Cancer the "brand", and help the cancer fighting community in any and every way I can. Within the next 5 years, I want Block Cancer to become a movement. I want to sponsor athletes, run camps for those who have lost loved ones to cancer, host grief retreats, etc. I want to sell top of the line products for those fighting cancer. We provide anything and everything for those who have been touched by cancer. The sky is the limit. An investor would help take this project off the ground. My dad always told me "you only have one chance to make a first impression", and with grant funding I will be able to release Block Cancer the brand as a polished, beautiful movement ready to change the world. My ideal audience/customer is someone who has been touched by cancer, someone who has had a loved one touched by cancer, or someone who simply enjoys purchasing aesthetic and trendy merchandise that supports a good cause. My customers are full of life, adventure seeking, artistic, and youthful (regardless of age). They want something different from a cancer brand; not the normal “5K t-shirt”. Instead, they want trendy, artistic, stunning products that help them feel beautiful while they fight cancer or help support cancer research. Customers are all genders with higher incomes, who are generally drawn to the ocean, the outdoors, philanthropy, and art. My audience faces a plethora of problems. For the ones fighting cancer, they are going through the most stressful, emotional, and terrifying time of their life. For the loved ones, they are facing fear of the unknown and trying to spend as much quality time with their loved one fighting cancer. Time is of the essence, and my audience knows how precious the moments you spend with your loved ones are. They are also frustrated that they cannot find a brand that values them as cancer fighters without sacrificing quality or aesthetic.

  • Self Identified Competition

The only brand I could find that would compete with mine is "Line in the Sand" https://www.lineinthesand.com/ My customers will pick my products over my competitors because there are extremely limited brands that offer anything similar to what Block Cancer provides. First, we donate 100% of net profits to cancer research and clinical trials. We have a rigorous vetting process and ensure our customers that their dollars are going directly towards on the ground, life-changing research. Second, the merchandise and products we provide are high quality, artistic, and trendy. Little to no brands have cancer at the forefront of what they do while providing this type of product/merchandise. I want any type of interaction with Block Cancer to be an experience – whether it’s visiting our website, looking at our social media pages, or wearing/using the gear – I want people to feel calm, confident, and beautiful.
