Platte Street Mercantile 20191447955 | Government Grant Application

Platte Street Mercantile | Application Preview

Platte Street Mercantile is seeking government grant funding to enhance their store's offerings and better serve the community. Their goals include expanding display areas to showcase a wider variety of products, integrating more hot food options to attract local office workers, and increasing marketing efforts to reach a broader customer base.

Located at 1620 Platte St., this women-owned, self-service convenience store combines technology with a friendly atmosphere. Customers enjoy a cashless shopping experience through ShopPoP Kiosks, allowing them to quickly scan and pay for items using various digital payment methods. The store focuses on hospitality, aiming to engage with customers while minimizing wait times and staffing needs.

Platte Street Mercantile prides itself on blending national brands with local products, offering an assortment of packaged meals, beverages, and fresh items sourced from nearby kitchens. Their mission centers on being a good neighbor, ensuring they meet the community's needs in an inviting environment.

Amid competition, particularly with the potential closure of a nearby Kum and Go, the business sees an opportunity to strengthen its presence in the area. They differentiate themselves by merging a traditional general store vibe with modern convenience, catering to the preferences of a younger, tech-savvy clientele while maintaining a unique, welcoming atmosphere.

We have so many creative ideas to make our store better and cater to more customers. We need to expand our display areas and increase our product assortment so we can be the best neighborhood store for our customers. We are invested in being a Good Neighbor and continually ask for customer feedback and product requests in order to serve our community the best we can.

  • Business Plan

More marketing in order to reach more customers. Expanded display areas for more inventory and products merchandise. Branch out into more hot food type items to better cater to the office workers in the vicinity. Bring in more local items to showcase other small businesses and to offer support. Platte Street Mercantile (plattestmercantile.com), is a women-owned business located at 1620 Platte St. near the Highlands pedestrian bridge intersection. We are a higher end, self-service, grab-and-go convenience store that provides packaged meals, beverages, snacks and limited grocery to the popular Denver community. To accommodate the younger resident/workforce in the historical Platte Street community, the store is completely cashless; all transactions are conducted on ShopPoP Kiosks, where customers scan their items, pay by swipe, tap, or touch credit card, we even take Applepay or Androidpay for true grab-and-go convenience. Our core business purpose is to prove that it is possible to be both a self-service, technology-driven retail operation and still be hospitable, friendly and courteous. So many think that adding self-service technology detracts from customer engagement and hospitality. We wholeheartedly disagree. When the transaction aspect of retail is automated for the customer through a kiosk, the store attendant is available to authentically engage with the customer, be helpful and courteous, tend to the store — rather than just scan product and swipe credit cards. It also minimizes overhead and payroll with a single staffing model. Platte Street Mercantile’s product mix brings together national brands and locally produced goods, including beverages, sweets, snacks, as well as shelf-stable and frozen meals. Fresh packaged burritos, sandwiches, salads, wraps and pastries also are available from local community kitchens. Our mission is to be a good neighbor to our community. To have what they need when they need it in a clean, friendly, welcoming neighborhood market.

  • Self Identified Competition

Kum and Go is the closest but we have been told they are closing. While it is unfortunate to hear about businesses closing this does give us an opportunity, with some help, to dominate the area. We wanted to create a local general store feel that honors the history of Platte St., while providing an elegant self-service experience to our tech savvy clientele. Platte Street Mercantile is a juxtaposition of old-school Denver general store mixed with clean, bright and modern design features, surfaces and appliances. Think Colorado rustic and modern glamour - we describe it as pairing cowboy boots with a wedding dress! Beautiful but comfortable. Upscale but convenient.
