Scott Labs 802876665 | Government Grant Application

Scott Labs | Application Preview

Scott Labs is seeking government funding to support the prototyping of its Vision Ally glasses, with a total budget of $5,200 allocated for essential expenses. This includes $2,500 for a 3D printer, $500 for printing materials, $200 for additional glasses, and $2,000 for an online marketing campaign.

The business aims to grow by launching an app called Tip Buddy in early 2023, which will automate gratuity calculations using computer vision technology. This app will serve as a platform to promote the benefits of assistive technology, enabling push notifications to highlight other products in the future.

Scott Labs intends to showcase a prototype of the Vision Ally glasses alongside Tip Buddy at the Lansing Assistive Technology Fair, followed by targeted online marketing towards the visually impaired community. The plan includes sponsoring charity events like Hockey For The Blind to further increase visibility within the community.

The funding request emphasizes Scott Labs' unique position in the tech industry, focusing on assistive technologies powered by computer vision and AI, aimed at enhancing accessibility. The potential economic impact is significant, as the cost of vision loss is estimated to exceed $35 billion. The company has conducted thorough research to ensure that its Vision Ally glasses effectively address this pressing issue.

In a competitive landscape, notable rivals include Envision, OrCam, and NuEyes Pro, which offer various computer vision capabilities. However, Scott Labs differentiates itself through the Vision Ally's innovative design, resembling regular eyewear while enabling discreet camera usage. Its architecture focuses on streaming video to a mobile AI app, allowing for seamless updates and an adaptable user experience based on deep learning from usage data, a feature competitors do not currently provide.

  • Business Plan

I plan to grow the business first by releasing Tip Buddy, an app that uses computer vision to calculate the gratuity of a bill from a service. This app will make the gratuity calculation automated for a faster and hastle free cash out process. This app will release in early 2023 and I will use this app to market the benefits of assistive technology. I will also be able to send push notifications to all my app users to promote my other assistive technology products. I hope to complete a prototype of the Vision Ally glasses and share a demo of the glasses with the app at a Lansing Assistive Technology Fair at Lugnuts Stadium. From there I plan on having a dedicated online marketing campaign to the visually impaired community to show the value proposition of the Vision Ally. I plan to sponsor visually impaired charity events such as Hockey For The Blind to bring further exposure of the community to my product. Scott Labs is an opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a tech company that has found a specialized niche for computer vision, machine learning, and AI. Scott Labs is passionate about creating assistive technology devices and applications to bring accessiblity to those who are currently lacking it. This new level of accessibility will have a major economic impact with an estimated cost of vision loss, including direct costs and lost productivity, is estimated to exceed $35 billion (Rein, Zhang, Wirth, et al., 2006). Scott Labs has done extensive research to find a profitable and viable way to address this problem with the Vision Ally.

  • Self Identified Competition

The top 3 competitors of the Scott Labs is the Envision, OrCam, and NuEyes Pro products. These products offer some computer vision features for their customers such as text detection and reading, facial recognition, and a few other features. Scott Labs's Vision Ally is different from anything on the market in terms of it's processing model. The technology in the glasses has been completely leaned out to where it's main focus is to stream video to a mobile AI application. This allows for a sleek design that keeps the camera discrete from the public which is not something that competitor's products offer. The Vision Ally is the only product that looks like a regular pair of glasses. This design advantage also allows for the AI app to be upgraded remotely through app updates which is not something our competitor's can currently offer. Our product is also able to take advantage of a deep learning model from user data to create an ever evolving and better experience for our customers.
