A Dogs Hide-A-Way 1733807-0 | Government Grant Application

A Dogs Hide-A-Way | Application Preview

A Dogs Hide-A-Way is seeking government grants to address necessary street improvements mandated by the city that include sidewalks, curbing, and lights along 15th Ave. The estimated cost of these improvements ranges from $1.5 million to $2 million, exceeding the property's worth. The business has updated its Conditional Use Permit to accommodate up to 200 dogs but is currently limited to only 60 due to the pending street improvements, creating a financial strain. Despite having demonstrated the capacity for 120 dogs, they are forced to restrict registrations.

The grant funding is framed as a community investment rather than just a personal business benefit. The owners argue that small businesses are unfairly held to the same standards as large corporations, facing additional burdens like a $100,000 land dedication to the city. A Dogs Hide-A-Way distinguishes itself from competitors, such as Barkzone and The Grand Fur Lodge, by being the only outdoor facility on nearly 5 acres and offering a unique, kennel-free environment where owners live on-site and directly oversee the care of the dogs.

  • Funding Usage

The city will not let us do anything more with the property until street improvements (sidewalks, curbing, lights, ...) are done for the entire length of the frontage on 15th Ave. The cost of those improvements will be $1.5-$2 million - more than the property is worth.

  • Business Plan

We have updated our Conditional Use Permit to allow up to 200 dogs, but they are holding us hostage for the street improvements. We can only have 60 until we do the street improvements but can't really afford those improvements with only 60 dogs. We have already demonstrated interest and customer base up to 120 dogs, but force people to register on-line and limit the numbers. Investors should not consider this an investment in me. This is an investment for the community (streets, sidewalks, lights...). We already had to sign over $100k worth of property to the city for their "land dedication". Now we have to pay to improve the property we just gave away to them. This is how our government does not back small businesses as we are held to the same standards as large corporations such as Intel and Extra Space Storage on either side of us.

  • Self Identified Competition

Barkzone, A Dog Gone Good Place, and The Grand Fur Lodge are all indoor based dog care facilities. We are the only outdoor facility located on nearly 5 acres. We are kennel free unless the owner prefers their dog sleep in a kennel and brings it. The owners live on site and continuously engaged in the business. The owners spend the night with the dogs and oversee their care.
