Ann Thel | Application Preview
Ann Thel's grant application outlines a plan to secure funding for her business, which aims to support at-risk youth in transitioning from high school to college, particularly in the fields of Math and Science.
The funding will be allocated to build or purchase a facility, acquire essential equipment like furniture, computers, and phones, provide transportation through vehicles, and cover wages along with insurance and benefits for staff. Additionally, the grant will help build partnerships within the community and state to enhance program outreach.
The business strategy focuses on collaborations with the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) and local schools to engage at-risk students. The goal is to prepare these youths for college and career readiness through targeted research and support. There's also an intent to expand the program to other states in the future.
Ann argues for the necessity of funding by referencing the idea of teaching self-sufficiency, emphasizing her business's objective to empower at-risk students to become productive citizens. She acknowledges the presence of competition, such as the South Carolina Youth Advocate Program and other youth programs, but highlights her unique focus on older students pursuing diplomas or GEDs, specifically in Math and Science.
Ann's competitive advantage lies in her targeted approach, data collection, and commitment to addressing the specific needs of students as they approach adulthood, including preparing them for post-secondary education through both academic support and enriching experiences like field trips.
