Ledyard Charter School Ledyard Charter School | Government Grant Application

Ledyard Charter School | Application Preview

Ledyard Charter School is seeking government grants to fund the expansion of its facilities in response to a significant demand and a waitlist of prospective students. The school plans to upgrade an unutilized section of its building to create two new classrooms, an auditorium, and offices for a counselor and a tutor. This upgrade will increase student enrollment capacity from 45 to 60, allowing the school to introduce more hands-on and experiential learning opportunities, including science and maker space classes and physical education. The auditorium will facilitate school assemblies, performances, and guest speakers.

The business plan outlines that by enhancing the space and adding new programs, the school can accommodate an additional 15 students due to the surplus of local interest. This expansion will also lead to the hiring of two new teachers, a counselor, and an additional tutor, ultimately enabling more low-income families to access wellness services and resources. Increased enrollment will also generate additional tuition revenue to support further growth.

Funding approval is justified by the school's unique position as the sole alternative high school for disadvantaged and disengaged students within a two-hour radius, significantly contributing to reducing dropout rates in surrounding schools. The school's unique educational approach promotes active participation, project-based learning, and personalized support for students with disabilities, benefiting the local community by alleviating costs for larger schools and improving academic outcomes for students.

The school operates without direct competition and collaborates closely with public schools. It distinguishes itself by offering a tailored educational experience for students with ADHD, ASD, and other learning challenges, leading to high demand for enrollment.

  • Funding Usage

Due to the high demand of our public charter school and a large waitlist, we are expanding our program. We currently have an un-utilized section of our building which we are upgrading in order to add two more classrooms, an auditorium, and offices for a counselor and tutor. With the addition of this extra space, we can increase our enrollment from 45 to 60 students. Our program is hands-on, and we practice experiential learning - these new large space areas will allow us to add additional hands-on science and maker space classes and movement/phys ed classes. Adding an auditorium will allow for full school assemblies and performances/speakers. While adding more space to our floor plan and adding more students to enrollment, we are also expanding our programmatic offerings.

  • Business Plan

By upgrading our unused space and adding now programs, we will be able to accommodate an additional 15 students to our public charter school. We currently have a waitlist and more interest from local families than we have space for. In addition to education, we offer many student wellness services and supplies which more local low-income families could take advantage of. We will also expand our staff by an additional 2 teachers, a counselor, and an additional tutor. By upgrading our space and thus increasing our student count, we will be able to take advantage of more tuition dollars which can further be used for expansion. Ledyard Charter School is the only alternative high school for disadvantaged and disengaged high school students within a two-hour radius. We accept students from all over New Hampshire and our program helps to curb the dropout rate in all of the surrounding sending schools. We offer a different approach to learning which includes active participation, project-based learning, interdisciplinary courses, engaging curriculum, real life/work skills, and additional academic supports for students with disabilities. Our local community benefits dramatically from our impact - larger schools do not have to pay for expensive placement programs, dropout rates are lower, low-income families and students get more resources, special education programs in the sending schools are at lower capacity, and more New Hampshire students are graduating from high school and entering the workforce. By upgrading our building and expanding our program to accommodate more students, our impact on the local community will be larger.

  • Self Identified Competition

We do not have any competitors, but rather work in close collaboration with the surrounding public schools. Unlike the larger public sending schools, our public charter school offers education specifically tailors to students with ADHD, ASD, and a variety of social and learning difficulties. We are more personalized and student-centered, and students are eager to enroll - we don't have enough space for them all!
