Community Brain Lab, LLC 92-3706974 | Government Grant Application

Community Brain Lab, LLC | Application Preview

Community Brain Lab, LLC is seeking government grants to support the growth of their organization, specifically requesting $20,000. This funding will be used to repair and furnish their office space for $2,000 and cover operating expenses for the summer months—June, July, and August—while they work to expand their income.

The business plan focuses on one-on-one intervention for students with learning disabilities, recognizing the limitations of individual specialists in terms of billable hours and the need for personalized support. Unlike other organizations that may emphasize group sessions for profit, Community Brain Lab aims to add more service providers and streamline processes. This growth will allow them to open additional locations, making their services more accessible to students and families.

The need for such services is significant, with one in five children in the U.S. experiencing learning and attention issues. Many students go unidentified in school and miss out on necessary accommodations, leading to an educational crisis exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Community Brain Lab employs NILD Educational Therapy®, a proven, research-based intervention designed to support students with learning disorders.

The local competition includes various tutoring services and a few dedicated schools, but these options often fall short in addressing the comprehensive needs of students with learning disabilities. Public schools in particular are overwhelmed and lack sufficient resources, leaving many students without adequate support.

Community Brain Lab's competitive advantage lies in offering a wide range of complementary services in one location, addressing the multiple needs that students may have simultaneously. This consolidation not only benefits clients by reducing the hassle of multiple appointments but also allows professionals to collaborate effectively, enhancing their practices and community presence.

In summary, Community Brain Lab is positioned to fill a critical gap in support for students with learning disabilities and seeks funding to enhance their capabilities and reach in the community.

Future Growth Because students benefit most from one-on-one intervention, and because one specialist is limited by the number of billable hours in a day, week, and month, there are rigid limits to the number of students one professional may support. Other organizations strive to maximize their earning potential by offering group sessions and classes. This may increase profit for the organization, but likely does not best serve the student. Community Brain Lab will pursue growth through adding service providers and streamlining processes to allow a comprehensive and efficacious selection of interventions within the same organization. Expansion of the organization would manifest in additional locations so that clients may have convenient access to resources close to where they live and go to school. According to Learning Disabilities Association of America (idaamerica.org), one in five children in the US have learning and attention issues. The American with Disabilities Act of 1990 defines a specified learning disability as "a neurological disorder that causes difficulties in learning that cannot be attributed to poor intelligence, poor motivation, or inadequate teaching" (ada.gov). Less than half of the total number of students estimated to have learning and attention issues are identified in school and receive some specialized instruction or accommodations through an IEP or a 504. Covid-19 and the resulting pandemic kept thousands (millions?) of already-struggling students away from the services in place to support them. This has created an educational crisis nationwide. On a personal level, the student who begins to struggle in school not only must deal with the fact of his failures, but also the emotions that go with them. Failing in school often propels students on a downward spiral that impacts their well-being, their future, and their families. Public schools may offer accommodations that reduce their work load at school, but few organizations provide intervention to help students overcome their disabilities and learn to succeed in their academic journey. NILD Educational Therapy® (nild.org) is a science-based intervention developed by neurologists, psychologists, and educators to offer individualized, systematic, and intensive instruction to remediate a broad range of deficits found in students with learning disorders. Alice and Jean sought training from this organization because, since its founding in 1973, the program has proven to significantly improve the cognitive skills and academic success of students with learning disorders. They continue to research and pursue additional skills and certifications to enable them to provide the highest and most effective level of targeted, individualized support for struggling learners.

  • Self Identified Competition

Tutoring Services There are many private tutors, locally owned tutoring centers, and tutoring franchises in Greenville and the surrounding area. Among these are: The Tutoring Center, Sylvan Learning, Wired Minds, Mathnasium, and Academic Coach. These centers offer homework support and subject-specific instruction with no expert qualifications for serving students with learning disorders. Schools A few schools exist in the Greenville area that are dedicated to helping students with learning differences, predominantly dyslexia. These include Camperdown Academy ($26,420/yr.), Chandler Academy ($22,550/yr.), and Lakes and Bridges Charter School (free admission by lottery). Many local private schools offer programs of varying size and quality for struggling students. These programs are markedly dwindling. Families of students with learning disorders increasingly must make the difficult choice either to home school or enroll their child in the public school. Public schools are overwhelmed by the number of students requiring IEP and 504 plans. They lack the staff, space, and resources to serve all the students who qualify for support. One speech-language pathologist estimated that only around 30% of students needing help received any sort of support in the public school system. Often this consists of only thirty minutes once a week in a group setting. Comparable Organization The Pearl Center for Learning in Mauldin represents the most similar organization to Community Brain Lab, employing multiple educational therapists for one-on-one intervention and offering classes to home school families. The Pearl Center's services are in high demand, with families waiting for openings to enroll. In conclusion, there is great need for organizations and individuals who are able to serve area students with learning disabilities. The need is growing disproportionately to those who are able to offer support to this segment of the population. Competitive Advantage of Community Brain Lab For Clients: While many schools and tutoring organizations specialize in one program or type of intervention, Community Brain Lab seeks to build a consortium of complementary services and resources under one umbrella and in one location. Commonly, students struggling with learning disorders experience a comorbidity of two or more deficits. For example, in addition to educational therapy, a dyslexic student may also need speech therapy and occupational therapy. Rather than making multiple appointments and trips across town for support, families may find all they need in one location. For Employees: Professionals working in proximity to one another benefit from in-person, real-time collaboration with other complementary specialists. This dynamic and cooperative learning environment serves to refine and elevate each professional's practice. Additional benefits for Community Brain Lab employees will include group marketing, streamlined billing processes, low overhead cost, a broad client base with referrals, and a greater presence in the community than a single individual is able to generate.
