AMVETS Post 13 Higgins Lake | Application Preview
AMVETS Post 13 in Higgins Lake is seeking government grants to renovate their building's bathrooms, making them ADA compliant. This update is crucial for accommodating wheelchair-bound veterans who visit for social activities, support, and services. Currently, the existing bathrooms are insufficient for their needs, lacking space and proper grab bars, which can lead to discomfort and embarrassment.
In the past three years, the post has experienced significant growth of 150 percent. The enhancements to the facilities are expected to further encourage participation from veterans with disabilities, particularly younger veterans who are increasingly seeking community involvement.
The justification for funding is rooted in a deep appreciation for the sacrifices these veterans have made for the country. Providing them with a safe and welcoming gathering space can significantly alleviate feelings of isolation and contribute to lowering veteran suicide rates. The post engages in various community support activities, such as Wreaths Across America and Toys for Tots, and operates entirely through volunteers, ensuring that all funds are dedicated to veterans and community betterment.
AMVETS Post 13 does not face competition in a traditional sense, but rather seeks to combat the struggles faced by veterans. Their competitive advantage lies in their volunteer-driven mission and unique offerings, including outdoor activities in a vast national forest and access to lakes for fishing and boating, drawing veterans from across Michigan and beyond.
