Heroes Outreach Program (HOPE) 81-4742772 | Government Grant Application

Heroes Outreach Program (HOPE) | Application Preview

Heroes Outreach Program (HOPE) is applying for government grants to further its mission of assisting veterans, particularly those who have served in combat. The organization's funding primarily aims to enhance its services, which include providing meals and a supportive environment for veterans during their Gatherings. Additional funds are also allocated for short-term assistance to homeless veterans and transportation to treatment programs.

As HOPE expands its reach, it creates opportunities for increased donations, enabling them to open new locations. Currently operating in four towns in Mid-Missouri, HOPE seeks to expand into larger cities such as Columbia, St. Louis, Springfield, and Kansas City, which will require more resources. The organization envisions extending its services throughout Missouri and potentially across the country as funding becomes available.

The need for funding is underscored by the unique challenges combat veterans face, often leading to isolation and mental health struggles. The program provides a vital outlet for veterans to connect and share experiences, fostering a sense of community and understanding.

HOPE stands out among other veteran services because it was founded by a veteran who has firsthand experience with trauma and mental health issues. The founder’s journey from struggle to recovery informs the program's approach, ensuring that no veteran feels alone. The organization emphasizes collaboration with other veteran services rather than competition, working together to enhance veterans' well-being.

  • Funding Usage

The number of veterans we can reach is in direct proportion to the funds we have at our disposal. With the exception of the filing and accountant fees, all other funds are spent directly on providing the meal and environment for the Gatherings. We have also expended funds to provide short term assistance to homeless vets and provided transportation services to get vets into treatment programs in other states. In short, all funds collected go to assisting veterans. We have no paid staff. All staff, with the exception of the accountant are volunteers.

  • Business Plan

As we expand into other areas, it opens up additional donation streams. The donations we receive in our current areas allows us to open up in new areas. It is only after we receive a certain level of cushion in our accounts that we are able to expand into new areas. We are currently in 4 towns in Mid-Missouri; Eldon, California, Versailles and Jefferson City. We have received numerous requests that we begin the program in Columbia, St Louis, Springfield and Kansas City. As these are larger markets, they will require greater funds to start up. We are constantly seeking new donation streams to assist us in expanding into those areas. With additional funding, we see our program in every town in Missouri and then able to expand across the country. This program is needed all across the country and it is our intention to provide it as resources come available. Veterans, especially combat veterans, have a saying, "If I have to explain it to you, you wouldn't understand." We understand that sounds like an insult, but it is not intended that way. It simply states that there are not enough words to describe, even one moment spent in combat. The sights, sounds, smells, fear, anger, loneliness, comradery, loyalty, despair, determination,... The list could go on and on. When a veteran is with another veteran, they know they don't have to explain it to them. They know they already understand. Most combat veterans isolate upon returning home. If they don't physically isolate, then they mentally isolate those parts of themselves that have been affected by their service. The Heroes Outreach Program provides them that outlet that allows them to emerge from their isolation and gain better mental health as a result.

  • Self Identified Competition

We really have no competitors. We provide a service to veterans. While there are numerous other veteran organizations out there, we all work together rather than in competition. Our program, in conjunction with other veteran organizations, work to enhance the well being of our veteran population. Our organization was started by a veteran who, himself, attempted suicide more than 20 years ago by a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He actually died 3 times following that incident, but has nearly completely recovered. This incident, and the years of combat experience he has gives him a unique insight into the issues confronting former combat veterans. With this experience, he started the program to ensure that no other veteran has to feel that they are alone and have no where to turn when pressures of life begin building. Our program is simple, we provide a unique environment for veterans to give them a safe and comfortable place, that they want to attend, to give them the therapy they so desperately need.
