Safety Through KNowledge | Application Preview
Safety Through Knowledge is applying for government grants to support its mission of providing essential training to volunteer fire companies. Many of these organizations struggle to afford necessary training, which compromises their ability to respond effectively to emergencies, especially regarding air monitoring. The grant funding would allow these volunteer companies to access training opportunities that would otherwise be financially out of reach.
Currently, the organization runs about ten classes annually, but aims to expand its offerings while ensuring some free classes remain for specific events like Fire and Hazmat conferences. The applicant emphasizes a commitment to both sustaining the business and enhancing the training opportunities available for volunteer firefighters.
The application highlights the founder's extensive background as a 27-year veteran of the Air Force and a 29-year veteran of the Baltimore County Fire Department. This experience fuels a desire to continue serving the community in retirement through safety training.
While there are competitors in the training space, most focus on military contracts, which can significantly elevate class costs. The applicant maintains lower fees, charging roughly half of what competitors like Noble Logistics, TEEX, and Signet North America do.
A key differentiator for Safety Through Knowledge is its hands-on training approach, particularly in the Meter training class, which features a low student-to-meter ratio that fosters an interactive learning environment. Student testimonials reinforce the effectiveness and quality of the training program, positioning it as a leading choice for those in the volunteer fire service.

Funding Usage
Our founding core value is to provide training to the Volunteer Fire Service. Most of these fire companies cannot afford to pay for training which puts them in danger due to their lack of understanding of air monitoring on emergency calls you see it on the news every week. This funding I would use to allow volunteer fire companies to apply for these grant funds in order for us to provide a training class for them that they normally would not be able to afford. I would not use the funds for career fire companies since they do have a training budget to pay for training.

Business Plan
Currently I am providing 10 classes per year due to the expenses I incur providing this safety training for free. My goal is to grow the business where I am getting paid for the classes I provide while still providing a few free classes per year especially to Fire and Hazmat conferences. My philosophy is I have to spend some start up money to get the business up and running which I am gradually getting there. Through this grant I can accomplish my mission of providing training to Volunteers and sustaining my business so I can keep doing this important health and safety training for the fire service. Investors should invest in my company because of the mission I am performing. Being a 27 year combat Veteran of the Air Force as well as 29 year Veteran of the Baltimore County Fire Department I want to continue to serve and give back to my community. I further want to as I say "do good for my fellow American". I have been service oriented my whole life and want to continue to give back in my retirement years.

Self Identified Competition
There are a few competitors in this arena, however most of them seek government contracts on the military side which puts their price per class out of the reach of my target population. They are not pursuing the civilian Fire fighter and Hazmat responder due to the monies they can get through Government contracts. I charge approximately half of what these company charge. 1. Noble Logistics 2. TEEX 3. Signet North America My Meter training class is the most interactive and hands on class in the country. No other program has a student ratio of 2 students to one meter. All others do a powerpoint slide show showing the meters and maybe have 1-2 working meters for their class. My class provides the best hands on training in the industry hands down. Every student that has taken our class says its the best meter class they have ever taken. See my website for student testimonials.
