Curiosity and Wonder Mobile Studio Curiosity and Wonder Mobile Studio | Government Grant Application

Curiosity and Wonder Mobile Studio | Application Preview

Curiosity and Wonder Mobile Studio is seeking government funding to enhance educational access for children in Title One schools by introducing a Montessori curriculum. The budget includes an initial investment of $8,000 for curriculum development, another $8,000 for planning and educator compensation, and $75,000 to purchase and renovate a Mercedes Sprinter Van as a mobile classroom, equipped with necessary facilities like air conditioning and a bathroom.

The founder has a notable track record, having established Portland's first public Montessori school and a sliding scale program for children under five. Currently in Vero Beach, Florida, the founder has noticed a gap in children’s basic life skills and knowledge. With 27 years of experience, the goal is to provide a Montessori education that enriches these children’s understanding of practical life, botany, anatomy, geography, and art.

Despite competition from a couple of small Montessori programs and free VPK schools, which often lack quality, Curiosity and Wonder's approach emphasizes peace education, practical skills, and a strong connection to nature. The methodology promotes collaborative learning across ages, allowing older children to mentor younger ones. This dynamic fosters a love for learning and encourages active engagement, setting it apart from traditional rote-learning environments. The proposal highlights a commitment to nurturing children's educational journeys, ultimately aiming for approval of the funding to make this vision a reality.

  • Business Plan

I plan to travel to Title one schools offering a Montessori education to children who do not have access. I would like to find a brick and mortar building and expand the enrollment. I was the founder of the first public Montessori school in Portland ,Oregon.(The Ivy School) I also started a sliding scale program for children under the age of 5 (Maria's Place). I am now in Vero Beach, Florida. I worked for 2 non profits here where I observed that children are lacking in Practical life skills as well as basic knowledge of the world they live in. For example: Botany, Anatomy, Geography and Art. As a Montessori educator with 27 years of experiences I would like to bring a Montessori school to these children.

  • Self Identified Competition

There are only 2 very small programs using the Montessori name. Other competitors would be VPK schools as they are free, however the quality of the curriculum is poor. My schools are beautiful and focus on peace education and practical life skills, care of self and care of environment and bringing children in tune with nature. These activities help to develop focus and concentration and eye hand concentration, preparing the child for higher levels of academic work. Montessori materials are hands on learning materials that work from the concrete to the abstract. Our classrooms are multi- age where the older children model and teach the younger children creating a love of learning. There is no rote learning in our environments making learning fun. Children take 100% ownership of their learning and can be found working at higher levels than traditional schools.
