Barton's Heating and Cooling | Application Preview
Barton’s Heating and Cooling is seeking government grants to fund the establishment of a local heating and cooling business. The funding will primarily be used to purchase a city lot for a shop, acquire essential tools, and possibly invest in a computer and accounting software if funds remain.
The business aims to start small with the owner and one or two employees, focusing on understanding the workload. The goal is to gradually expand the team and manage multiple projects simultaneously, providing essential services to a community currently reliant on businesses from neighboring towns. After five years of operation, the owner intends to invest in a directional boring machine for geothermal system installations.
The grant application emphasizes the owner’s background as a Purple Heart veteran with significant experience in the heating and air industry, having successfully managed and turned around a struggling shop within a larger company. The owner is dedicated to delivering quality work and fostering skill development among employees. There is a strong community demand for local services, with many residents encouraging the owner to take this entrepreneurial step.
In terms of competition, there are a few older competitors who are nearing retirement and another young competitor from a nearby town. The owner’s experience with both residential and commercial projects sets them apart, as the local competitors do not handle commercial jobs. This unique expertise provides a competitive advantage, especially with ongoing construction in the community that currently necessitates hiring firms from outside the area.

Business Plan
I want to start small having me and maybe one-two other employee to get things started as see how much of a work load I will have. Then I plan to grow to have more employees and have multiple jobs running at once so that the company will be making more money and serving our community. Right now many people in our community have to call heating and cooling businesses from other towns because we don't have many people like this in our area. After up and running for five years I would love to be able to purchase a directional boring machine so that I am able to run my own lines for geothermal systems. I am a purple heart veteran that served my country. I have worked hard to make the company that I am working for successful. I have been running a heating and air business for a company that has 10 shops. I am running one of them and have had up to 20 employees under me. I drive an hour to work and back. When they asked me to take over this shop they told me they wanted to give me a shot in turn it around because it had been losing the company money the last couple years. Within the first year I turned the shop around and made it one of the top selling shops in the company. Not only do I sell jobs and manage the books and money for our shop I will put my work boots on and help teach my employees how to do jobs to the best of their ability. I am a true believer and give 100% to everything I do. I have worked for everything I have and feel as if I want to finally make my dreams a reality. I want to have my name on the side of my truck and building and make it a successful business that our community needs. I can promise investors that I give 100% to a business that isn't mine so I know when my name is one on the job I will give more. I have many people in my community begging me to take this step.

Self Identified Competition
My first competitor is an older gentleman who is close to retirement. I started out working with him, but then was offered a job with this bigger company with more room to grow. He and I have a great working relationship and he wants me to come back to the community and start my own because he can't not keep up and know that I will take pride in doing a good job for the people in our community. The next competitor is another older gentleman that is also close to retirement. I don't think that he does much work in this community because what I have known him to do I get a call usually to come fix it. The third competitor would be from another town close by. He is a young man who has done great and I hear he does good work but doesn't come our way as much as he is busy in the town he lives in. I think where I am different from my competitors is I have been working for a bigger company and have been in charge of both residential and commercial jobs. My competitors don't do any commercial jobs. So any big buildings being built in our community have to hire companies from out of town.
