Happened by Chance Horses Inc 47-1300423 | Government Grant Application

Happened by Chance Horses Inc | Application Preview

Happened by Chance Horses Inc, led by Linda Nemec in New Braunfels, TX, is a 501(c)(3) horse rescue that has been operating since 2014. The organization has successfully saved, rehabilitated, and rehomed over 200 horses, often collaborating with law enforcement on cases of neglect. The rescue operates on family land in Guadalupe County, a property that has been in Linda's family since 1992.

Following the recent passing of her mother, who was a key supporter of the rescue, Linda faces the challenge of potentially losing the land as her brothers wish to sell it. She seeks a land grant to buy out their shares, ensuring that the property remains a sanctuary for horses and is not developed for commercial purposes. Linda emphasizes the need to protect the land not only for her rescue but also as a home for her and her special needs child.

By securing the property, Linda believes she can continue her work without the threat of closure. She acknowledges that there are larger rescues with more funding but aims to compete and help as many horses as possible. The rescue's unique name honors her son, making it a personal mission for her. If she is ineligible for grant assistance, she is open to suggestions for alternative funding sources.

  • Funding Usage

My name is Linda Nemec. I run a 501 c3 horse rescue in New Braunfels, TX. I am not certain if I could be even considered for a grant. If I don't try, the answer is no. I operate my rescue on family land. Since 2014, I ran the rescue with my mother, Rosie. My mom had living estate to the 9.8-ish acres we own. However, since 1992, the land has actually been in the names of myself and my 3 siblings. Things were running amazing. We have saved, rehabbed and rehomed over 200 horses who otherwise would have had no one and would have been left to uncertain futures. I work closely with LEO when they have to seize horses from neglectful owners. The property is situated in Guadalupe County, nestled among farm land and a few other residences. We are at the end of a rural road. Surrounded on 3 sides by farm land. The other side is a neighbor with 9-10 acres. The problem: My mother passed away on 06/01/2023 at the age of 84. She is no longer able to defend the work she and I started. The work that she loved. She lived on this property for over 60 years. I grew up there, went to school, married, divorced and returned there in 2005. I started the rescue in 2014. My brothers have no real connection to the property or where they also grew up and it is their opinion the property should be sold and they collect their portion of the funding or value of it. This would be devastating to our mother, but more so to me (as this is where I have lived the past 19 years - where I raise my special needs child and where I run the horse rescue.) I am looking for assistance in securing the property through a land grant to buy out my brothers' portion of the land. I feel this will protect the integrity of the land and the land that surrounds it. There are many commercial acquisitions occuring in the area we are located and it's disheartening to say the least. I'd hate to see the land put up for auction and a corporation obtain it and turn it commercial or even residential for that matter. If I don't qualify for assistance, might you provide other sources that I could check into. I appreciate your time and consideration,

  • Business Plan

With securing the land I currently operate on, I am able to continue forward. Without assistance, I may have to close. Happened by Chance Horses Inc, helps local LEO when they have to seize horses from neglectful owner. We accept owner surrenders from horse owners when they can no longer care for their horses. We intercept horses at auction before they are purchased to be exported.

  • Self Identified Competition

Their are larger rescues with larger funding opportunities. I wish to be able to compete and help as many horses as they do. My rescue is named after my special needs son. He is the inspiration behind the rescue.
